3 proposed medical colleges with 100 MBBS seats each: Odisha to move NMC for permission

Orissa: Accelerating the work on the three proposed medical colleges and hospitals to ensure that the institutes can start their admission process from the next academic session, the state has directed the officials concerned to move the National Medical Commission (NMC) for the necessary permission.

The new three medical colleges which have been proposed by the authorities include Mahanadi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research at Talcher, Medical College and Hospital at Sundargarh, and Jagannath Medical College and Hospital at Puri. All three new colleges are most likely to have 100 MBBS seats each per year. The work regarding the new medical colleges is progressing rapidly as a target has been set to start the admission process for MBBS courses in these medical colleges from the academic session 2021-22.

OMMCOM reports that Chief Secretary Ashit Tripathy held a meeting with the higher-level authorities in a virtual mode from Lokseba Bhavan on 19th November and discussed several issues relating to the construction of the new medical colleges. He also reviewed the progress of the work connected with the establishment of the three new medical colleges. Additional Chief Secretary Health Pradeep Kumar Mahapatra, Director of Medical Education, and Training Dr. Mohanty, and many other senior officials from the Health and Family Welfare Department, NTPC, and MCL also participated in the discussion.

While reviewing the progress of the medical colleges, Chief Secretary Asit Tripathy also directed officials to ensure complete furnishing of the buildings by December. These institutions would also provide tertiary healthcare facilities, said a health official.

According to IANS, the Talcher college that is supported by Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) would be run through a trust on 'no profit no loss basis'. The medical college at Sundargarh on the other hand is supported by NTPC.

Mr. Tripathy has also instructed the authorities to approach the National Medical Commission (NMC) for securing NMC's approval so that the colleges can start the admission process from the coming session.

The NMC is a regulatory body of 33 members to regulate medical education and medical professionals in India. It replaced the Medical Council of India on September 25, 2020.
