Odisha MBBS seat scam case: ED attaches Rs 58.15 Lakh assets
Bhubaneshwar: Following a MBBS seats cheating case where a doctor was duped of Rs 69 lakh, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has provisionally attached immovable and movable assets worth ₹58.15 lakh in connection with the case.
These assets included bank balances worth ₹12.15 lakh and immovable assets worth ₹46 lakh and were attached under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA), according to a statement from the probe agency.
Medical Dialogues team had reported in December 2019 regarding the case where a wanted fraudster who had siphoned off Rs 69 lakh from a medical college professor under the pretext of providing MBBS admission for his daughter was arrested by the police. The investigation into the case was expedited in 2019 after an associate professor at Silchar Medical College, Assam filed a complaint with the Crime Branch alleging that the accused had duped him of Rs 69 lakh in the year 2015.
However, the ED initiated the investigation under PMLA on the basis of various first information reports (FIRs) and charge sheets filed by the crime branch, CID, Odisha Police, against the accused and others for duping a number of aspirants from Odisha and beyond with a false promise to provide medical (MBBS) seats in different Medical colleges under management quota, the agency said on Thursday.
The statement from the probe agency said the attached properties of ₹58.15 lakh were acquired from the said proceeds of crime and are found in possession of the main accused, his accomplices and their relatives. Further investigation into the matter is in progress.
