Dr Madhu Balaji Sivakumar Receives IAPM Young Scientist Award at TAPCON 2026
Dr Sivakumar is currently serving as Assistant Professor in the Department of Cytogenetics at Christian Medical College and Hospital.
Puducherry: Dr Madhu Balaji Sivakumar, a molecular pathologist, has been honoured with the Young Scientist Award by the Indian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists at TAPCON 2026, held at the Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences.
Dr Sivakumar is currently serving as Assistant Professor in the Department of Cytogenetics at Christian Medical College and Hospital. He is also pursuing a PhD at Bharathidasan University, where his research focuses on breast cancer genetics.
Prior to his current role, he worked as a Post-doctoral Fellow in the Department of Cytogenetics at Christian Medical College, Vellore, gaining experience in conventional karyotyping, fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH), RT-PCR, microarray technology, and next-generation sequencing (NGS). He also served as Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology and Molecular Genetics at Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College and Hospital.
His professional career includes serving as Managing Director of Rockcity Diagnostic Centre Pvt Ltd, Senior Resident in the Department of Pathology at Trichy SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre and Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College and Hospital; Consultant Pathologist and Quality Manager at Doctors Diagnostic Centre Private Limited; and Junior Resident in the Department of Pathology at Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute. He completed his internship at K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College.
His work focuses on integrating cutting-edge genomic technologies into clinical practice for the diagnosis and management of inherited genetic disorders, prenatal abnormalities, solid tumours and haematological malignancies. I have extensive experience in the analysis of Chromosomal Microarray (CMA), Fluorescence in Situ Hybridisation (FISH), Karyotyping and Genetic sequencing including clinical variant interpretation. Over the past three years, he has secured competitive research funding exceeding ₹3.8 crore as principal investigator and co-principal investigator, supporting the development of next-generation diagnostic technologies. Open to collaborations in translational oncology, molecular diagnostics and precision medicine.
The award was presented by Dr. Asranthi Kar, National President, IAPM, during the inaugural ceremony, in recognition of his outstanding research contributions in Molecular Pathology, Translational Cancer Research, and Precision Medicine. This achievement reflects a strong commitment to advancing research, innovation, and excellence in the field of pathology.
