IGMCRI's Nursing college Principal, Faculty under probe over caste abuse allegations by student
Puducherry- Alleging assault and caste-based abuse, a second-year nursing student has filed a complaint with the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
According to The New Indian Express report, the complaint has been filed against the principal of the nursing college attached to the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (IGMCRI), three faculty members, and a student for alleged assault and caste-based abuse at the institute's Kathirkamam campus.
Following the complaint, the Commission directed the IGMCRI administration to conduct an internal investigation. The probe led to the suspension of the student accused of assault and the transfer of a faculty member back to hospital duties.
According to TNIE media news report, sources said the administration is preparing to submit its investigation report to the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes soon. Once the report is submitted, the PCR cell will take action to register a case based on the police report.
Meanwhile, the suspended student reportedly claimed to have attempted suicide in a social media post on Tuesday, but authorities denied the claim. Moreover, the commission is closely monitoring the case to ensure accountability and justice for the affected student.

Medical Dialogues earlier reported that the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, came under the scanner of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) over allegations of discrimination and harassment faced by Scheduled Caste employees.
The Commission issued a formal notice to PGIMER on September 4 after receiving a complaint from a doctor on February 21, 2025. The NCSC has invoked its powers under Article 338 of the Constitution of India to inquire into the matter.
In its notice, the Commission directed PGIMER to submit details of the allegations along with the action taken report within 15 days of receiving the communication. The notice warns that if PGIMER fails to respond in time, the Commission may exercise powers similar to those of the Civil Courts.
