Centre says No proposal to establish new AIIMS in Punjab
Punjab: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has confirmed that there are no plans to establish a new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Punjab. This was stated by the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, in response to a query in the Lok Sabha.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), the government has so far approved the establishment of 22 AIIMS across various states and union territories, including one in Punjab at Bathinda, which is already functional.
The minister was responding to the questions raised by Shri Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa about whether the government proposes to formulate any scheme to establish a new AIIMS in Punjab on the line of AIIMS Delhi; if so, the details thereof; and if not, the reasons thereof?
Minister of State for Health, Shri Prataprao Jadhav informed that under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), till date establishment of 22 All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has been approved in various States/UTs in the country including one AIIMS at Bathinda in Punjab, which is functional. In the current phase of PMMSY, there is no proposal to establish a new AIIMS in Punjab.
AIIMS Bathinda, established in 2019 under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), is a premier healthcare and medical education institute in Punjab. The institute offers an MBBS program with an annual intake of 100 students. Additionally, AIIMS Bathinda has expanded its academic portfolio to include a wide range of postgraduate (PG) courses across various specialities. The available PG programs include MD, MS, and MDS courses in disciplines such as Anaesthesia, General Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Radiodiagnosis, and more, totalling around 22 PG courses.
