SHRC Issues Notice To Tirunelveli Collector, city police commissioner over NEET Centre assault matter
Tamil Nadu- A video recently went viral on social media in which the owner of a private National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) coaching centre in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu was seen beating students for sleeping in the classroom, resulting in minor injuries to some of the students.
On this, the Tirunelveli police registered a case against the owner/instructor of the private NEET coaching centre, identified as Jalal Ahmed, a native of Kerala. A case was registered against Ahmed after the CCTV footage of the assaults went viral on X (Formerly Twitter). In the footage, Ahmed is seen beating the male students with a thin stick and throwing slippers at the female students.
Meanwhile, according to police sources, the accused Ahmed beaten up the male students when he saw one of them sleeping during the morning classes. He threw slippers at the female students because one of them had kept the shoes outside the classroom, at some unknown place other than the designated area for keeping shoes.
After the video of the assault was released, State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) member Kannadasan visited the coaching centre to investigate the entire matter. On this, the SHRC has issued a notice to the Tirunelveli Collector and the city Police Commissioner and sought a detailed report within six weeks.
As per the DTNext Media news report, the SHRC has asked the collector to submit a report on the licence of the private NEET coaching centre, stating that the centre was also managing a hostel for 52 female students without a valid licence.
The incident reportedly took place in October this year, but only it came to light after several students and a staff member of the private NEET coaching centre filed a complaint against Ahmed. Currently, he is said to be absconding due to fear of arrest.
