Snakes in rooms, scorpions on campus: GMC Medak MBBS students demand immediate hostel repairs

Hyderabad: Raising serious concerns over safety and living conditions, the MBBS students at the Government Medical College (GMC) in Medak have urged the authorities to immediately improve hostel infrastructure and address unhygienic conditions in the hostel mess.
According to a recent report by Telangana Today, the Students stated that the hostel premises have become extremely unsafe, with snakes and scorpions frequently entering the rooms. Recently, two students were stung by scorpions.
“During the ongoing rains, the risk of snake and scorpion bites has increased. Poisonous snakes, including Russell’s vipers and cobras, have been repeatedly spotted on hostel premises and entering rooms, creating fear among students and posing a threat to our safety,” they said.
The first-year MBBS students, who are preparing for their university examinations in the coming months, have said that instead of studying in a safe and peaceful environment, they are forced to live under a constant shadow of fear.
According to the students, the condition of the hostel mess is very poor; water drips into the dining hall during the rains, making it difficult to eat in a clean environment. Consequently, the poor maintenance of the mess has further added their difficulties.
“We urge the authorities to take action, ensuring effective snake and pest control measures, improving hostel safety, repairing the infrastructure, and renovating the mess facilities. The safety, health, and welfare of medical students must be treated as a priority, and prompt intervention is essential to prevent any unfortunate incidents,” the students told TelanganaToday.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that after medical students residing in the girls' hostel at Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC) staged a protest over 'extremely distressing and unsafe living conditions,' the college administration issued a clarification stating that the concerns have been taken into consideration and necessary action has been initiated.
