UP to set up New Medical Colleges- 1 each with 100 MBBS seats in Baghpat, Hathras, Kasganj
Lucknow: In a significant boost to healthcare education in Uttar Pradesh, the state is set to establish three new medical colleges in the districts of Baghpat, Hathras, and Kasganj.
Officials from the medical education department revealed that the proposal for these colleges will soon be presented to the state cabinet for approval.
These institutions will be developed under the Central government’s Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme and will operate through a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
This initiative is expected to add at least 300 MBBS seats to the existing 11,200 seats in the state’s medical education system, reports Hindustan Times.
According to Kinjal Singh, Director General of Medical Education in Uttar Pradesh, in addition to these new colleges, construction of the autonomous state medical college in Amethi is making steady progress, with 34 percent of the work already completed. Once the National Medical Commission (NMC) portal opens in New Delhi, an application will be submitted to approve 100 seats for the 2025-26 academic session.
Similarly, the Kalpanath Rai Institute of Medical Sciences in Mau, which is being developed under the PPP model, is also nearing completion. Officials aim to seek NMC approval for this institution as well, targeting the 2025-26 academic year for its first intake of students.
The expansion of medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh over the past few years has been remarkable. In 2017, the state had 39 medical colleges—14 government and 25 private. By 2024, that number has doubled to 78, with 43 government-run and 35 private colleges now operational. This surge has led to a 108 percent increase in MBBS seats, rising from 5,390 in 2016-17 to 11,200 in 2024-25. Of these, 5,150 seats are in government colleges and 6,050 in private institutions, reports the daily.
Postgraduate (PG) medical education has also seen significant growth. In 2016-17, Uttar Pradesh had 1,344 PG seats, with 741 in government and 603 in private institutions. By 2024-25, the total number of PG seats has risen to 3,781, with 1,759 in government colleges and 2,022 in private colleges—a 181 percent increase.
