BJP MP Swaraj criticises Bengal CM over remarks on MBBS student gangrape case

Kolkata: BJP MP from New Delhi, Bansuri Swaraj, recently strongly criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's remarks following the alleged gang rape of an MBBS student in Durgapur, urging her to focus on ensuring women's safety rather than advising them to avoid going out at night.

Addressing a press conference, Swaraj said the comments were “unfortunate” and could send the wrong message at a time when strict action was expected. She further alleged that the state government has shown a pattern of insensitive responses in the past to incidents of sexual violence.

According to IANS, BJP MP from New Delhi, Bansuri Swaraj, asked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to stop ''justifying'' rape and advising women not to step out of homes after dark.

Addressing media persons, Swaraj referred to the gang-rape in Durgapur and stated, “A Dalit medical college student is gang-raped under the Mamata Banerjee’s government, but instead of taking strict action, she insensitively justifies this heinous crime, saying women shouldn’t go out late at night. This is utterly shameful.”

“West Bengal’s TMC government has become a symbol of regressive thinking. From Park Street 2012 to Hanskhali 2022, Kamduni 2013, and the RG Kar Medical College incident in 2024, Mamata Banerjee has continuously tried to justify rape incidents with shameful statements,” she said, quotes IANS

Swaraj stated that this is not the first instance and that a clear pattern has emerged, with the TMC becoming synonymous with regressive thinking. Even in the 2012 brutal rape case in Park Street, CM Banerjee blamed the victim, stating it was a ‘Sajano Ghatana,’ implying the case was fabricated, a completely shameful stance, she said.

The BJP MP said, “Mamata Banerjee herself raises the slogan of ‘Maa, Mati, and Manush’, yet under her rule, Bengal’s ‘Maa’ is humiliated, ‘Mati’ is drenched in blood, and ‘Manush’ is in distress.” Swaraj highlighted that, during the R.G. Kar rape case in 2024, CM Mamata Banerjee tried to justify the crime, claiming that such incidents occur regularly because young men and women now walk hand in hand.

"This reflects TMC’s regressive mindset. In 2024, when medical students from the state protested and sought justice, Mamata Banerjee labelled them as ‘motivated’" she said. BJP spokesperson Guru Prakash Paswan stated that this is an extremely serious matter, and it is important to bring it to public attention that Congress leaders have remained silent on the inhuman incident involving the Dalit girl in West Bengal, reports IANS.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that a 23-year-old MBBS student, the resident of Jaleswar in Odisha, was allegedly raped after being abducted by some unidentified men when she stepped outside her college campus with a male classmate to eat in the industrial Durgapur in West Bengal's West Bardhaman district recently.

State health principal secretary Narayan Swaroop Nigam said that Director of Medical Education Indrajit Saha sent a notice to the hospital in Durgapur and sought a detailed report.

The crime was reported when she, who along with her a male classmate, went out of campus around 9 pm to eat out, a group of unidentified men surrounded them and abducted her leaving out the male student. They dragged her to a nearby forest where one of them allegedly raped her.

Police said they were already probing the allegation and interrogated some suspects, including the friend who fled from the scene leaving her female classmate in the hands of the perpetrators.

In the ongoing probe into the gangrape incident in Bengal, two more persons were arrested yesterday. Now, altogether 5 accused are in custody.
