IPGMER to get Infectious Diseases Dept

Kolkata: The Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (IPGMER) is set to start a super speciality course on Infectious Diseases (ID) as the institute has received the administrative sanction from the state for its infectious diseases (ID) department.

In December, the School of Tropical Medicine (STM), Kolkata, secured approval from the National Medical Council to start three seats of DM in ID. If all the development occurs according to the plan, after STM, IPGMER will be the second in Bengal to run this course.

As per a recent media report by the Times of India, the health department issued an order and stated that the state has given its nod for the creation of 50 new posts in different categories for the ID department at IPGMER & SSKM Hospital.

"A 60-bed ward has already been created. Along with the creation of posts, we will also require to gradually upgrade facilities, including the laboratory," IPGMER director Manimoy Banerjee stated.

IPGMER is supposed to apply to get permission for four seats after arranging all the required infrastructure, including manpower. IPGMER has an advantage as it is a multispeciality hospital where transplant surgeries are carried out frequently.

It was earlier reported by the daily that an ID ward was supposed to be set up at Sambhunath Pandit Hospital (SNPH), its satellite unit. Outdoor services had also been initiated. Dr Yogiraj Ray and Ayan Basu, two of the faculty members are currently handling the department. The order from the health department has allowed the creation of four more posts for faculty members along with nursing staff, medical technologists, and junior doctors.

"Transplant infections are part of the curriculum to study infectious diseases. So that is an added advantage at IPGMER," ID associate professor Yogiraj Ray told TOI.

Due to the scarcity of ID specialists, the health sectors had to face a serious scarcity of manpower during the pandemic. While the ID department only exists in a few institutes, a few medical colleges in other states are also looking forward to open such departments.
