Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder in which the body does not make enough hemoglobin, a red blood cell protein that carries oxygen to the cells in the body. There are different types of thalassemia characterized by the part of hemoglobin affected and the severity of the resulting anemia. Severe anemia can damage organs. Thalassemia is more common in persons with certain family ancestries
