New Delhi: Doctors working with the Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) associated hospitals of Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital (LNJP) and GB Pant Hospital have gone on a flash strike after an on-duty resident doctor was physically assaulted by the patient attendants.
The incident took place last night a Third-year medico of MAMC at the emergency medicine department was attacked by attendants of a patient. The resident doctor has sustained multiple bruises over the chest, right shoulder dislocation and injuries to chest and abdomen
"A patient was brought to the ER department and later died of some complications. An attendant then assaulted one of the doctors," RDA president Saiket Jena alleged.
"We have repeatedly requested for renewal of marshalls, but of no one So under this circumstances we are forced to go on indefinite strike including both emergency and routine services w.e f 08/07/2019 from 900 am," stated the letter from the resident doctors to the CCMO
"In last few days, several such incidents of attack on doctors have taken place in the hospital premises. So, we have gone on a strike," Dr Jena informed Media Persons.
As part of the strike, which started in the morning, both regular and emergencies services are currently shut, affecting patients at the biggest Delhi government-run hospital, the medical superintendent said.
The main demand is augmenting of security deployment, including having marshalls in the emergency department, Medical Superintendent Dr Kishore Singh said. A meeting is currently underway between the RDA and hospital authorities, he said.
The incident comes days after two junior doctors at NRS Hospital in Kolkata were assaulted allegedly by the relatives of a patient who died at the hospital. Junior doctors in West Bengal went on a strike following the incident over lack of security at the workplace.
