New Delhi: Through a recent notice, the Dental Council of India (DCI) has informed about the Orientation Program through online platform scheduled to be conducted by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka to establish Dental Education Units.
Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bengaluru, Karnataka has emphasized the need to sensitise the Principals of Dental Colleges regarding the changes in dental education curriculum, use of IT and digital technology, changing roles of teachers and methods assessment of students learning leading to the need of having teacher trained in Pedagogy and it's planning to conduct a webinar on 'Training of Dental Teachers in Pedagogy' on 12th July, 2021.
This webinar will provide the justification for why there is a need for training the teachers of dental colleges in pedagogic methods, and establishing Dental Education Units in every dental college. The participants of the webinar therefore, would be the Principals/Directors of Dental Colleges across India. All the information pertaining to Webinar is mentioned below.

Objective of orientation: Sensitization of the Principals of Dental Colleges of the changes in the Dental Education scenario in Curriculum, use of IT and digital technoIogy, changing roles of teachers and methods assessment of student learning leading to the need of Training Teachers in pedagogy.
Outcome of Orientation: Establishment of Dental Education Units in Dental Colleges.
Why this Orientation: Bourgeoning development in Dental Education; changes in the role of teachers from information givers to facilitators and mentors; information technology and digitaI communication impact on teaching learning; challenges to validity and reliability of traditional methods of Assessment of student learning resulting in rethinking and shift to frequent assessments using multiple methods of testing of not only skiIls but also attitudes, and ethical understanding through direct observations or online by the help IT etc. are few examples not speak of changes in Curriculum.
It is therefore, essential for Dental College teachers to be aware, able to be able apply in their teaching. Equipping Dental college teachers to take on these roles require training, hence the need for establishing Dental Education Units.
Who will be Target group: Principals of Dental Colleges. It is suggested that this being the first program 100 s, 25 each from Dental colleges situated in Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western regions of India may be invited by the DCI.
How will the Program be Conducted and who will be Resource Persons:
It will be online hosted by RGUHS on Zoom platform.
RGUHS has been conducting basic level three-day Teacher Training (ToT) programs. A pool of resource persons who have undergone special training in Educational Science & TechnoIogy both at RGUHS and in other centres like WHO, FAIMER, etc., with experience in conducting Teacher Training workshops for Dental College teachers in RGUHS affiliated as also constituent colleges of Deemed to be Universities in Karnataka and Dental colleges situated outside Karnataka will be the Resource persons. There will be interactive presentations. Question answer session will be before the conclusion of the program.
Duration of Program: The orientation program will be for half day, tentatively, between 10.30 am to 1.00 pm. After formal inauguration by the President of DCl, and the Vice Chancellor of RGUHS, the academic sessions will begin.
Is there precedence: Erstwhile Medical Council of India made it mandatory in 1 999, for every medical college to establish a Medical Unit and every to undergo teacher training. With the pool of trained teachers, National Medical Commission has introduced teaching of ATCOM development of attitudes and communication skills and also Competency Based curriculum.
