Silver Nitrate Outperforms Fluticasone for Long-Term Rhinitis Relief, Suggests Study

Moderate persistent rhinitis affects 15–20% of the global population. Given the clinical gaps in fluticasone compliance and symptom recurrence, Umamaheswaran et al. evaluated the efficacy of topical 25% silver nitrate versus fluticasone nasal spray on clinical symptom scores and endoscopic findings.

Therefore, the prospective interventional trial randomized 120 patients with moderate persistent rhinitis to receive either weekly 25% topical silver nitrate for one month or twice-daily fluticasone nasal spray for six months. Excluding those with anatomical obstructions or prior surgery, researchers utilized SNOT-22 scores and endoscopic evaluations at 1, 3, and 6 months to measure long-term therapeutic efficacy.

Key Clinical Findings of the Study Includes:

• Enhanced Sneezing Control: Patients treated with silver nitrate showed significantly better improvement in sneezing (p = 0.01) compared to the fluticasone cohort.

• Reduction in Nasal Discharge: The silver nitrate intervention was statistically superior in reducing chronic nasal discharge (p = 0.03).

• Superior Congestion Relief: Data from the study confirmed that silver nitrate more effectively addressed nasal congestion (p = 0.01) than traditional spray.

• Improved Quality of Life: Significant improvements in sleep (p = 0.02) and daily activities (p = 0.01) were reported by those in the silver nitrate group.

• Reduced Symptom Recurrence: Silver nitrate demonstrated a superior ability to control the recurrence of symptoms over the six-month observation period.

The results suggest that 25% silver nitrate serves as a highly effective and promising alternative to fluticasone for treating Moderate Persistent Rhinitis, providing superior symptom control and overall patient satisfaction.

Thus, the study concludes clinicians may consider the application of silver nitrate as a viable therapeutic strategy for patients who require long-term symptom management with reduced recurrence.

While the findings are compelling within a tertiary care setting, future multi-center research involving larger, diverse populations could further solidify the role of silver nitrate in standard clinical practice.
