An Instagram post claims that applying a cream made from carrot juice, coconut oil, almond oil, and Vaseline every night before bed eliminate wrinkles overnight. The claim is False.

Claim

The Instagram user naturalrecipie89 has posted a reel that claims that applying a cream made from carrot juice, coconut oil, almond oil, and Vaseline every night before bed eliminate wrinkles overnight. The reel states "Put Vaseline on a carrot and you'll be shocked at the results. Japanese women put 3 drops of this serum before bed, and all their wrinkles disappear overnight", then goes on explaining the recipe by saying, "To get started you'll need two carrots. Peel them, grate them, and press them into a clean cloth. Crush the cloth between your hands to extract the juice from the grated carrots. Once done, add a tablespoon of coconut oil and a teaspoon of almond oil. Finally, add a large spoonful of Vaseline. Heat the mixture in a water bath until the Vaseline dissolves. Take out the bowl and leave it to cool, stirring to obtain a creamy texture. Apply this cream every night before bed, and you'll be shocked at the results."

Fact Check

The claim is False. With age, lines and creases on the skin become more apparent. While ingredients like carrot juice, coconut oil, almond oil, and Vaseline may help moisturize, there is no evidence supporting their combined use for instant or complete wrinkle removal overnight.

Health benefits of Carrot, Coconut oil, Almond oil and Vaseline

Carrots (Daucus carota subsp. sativus) come in various colours like purple, black, red, white, and yellow. They are rich in nutrients such as carotenoids, flavonoids, vitamins, and minerals, offering many health benefits. These nutrients act as antioxidants, support immunity, and promote eye health. Carrots help manage diabetes, lower cholesterol, protect the heart, liver, and kidneys, and aid in wound healing. Carrot seeds also have antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Coconut, or Cocos nucifera, is highly valued for its nutritional and medicinal benefits, now gaining attention in Western medicine. Coconut oil, a common cooking oil in Asia, contains 90-95% saturated fats, mainly lauric acid (47.5%), considered a healthier saturated fat. Extracted from dried coconut meat (copra), it has antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties. Used in Ayurveda, it also supports heart and liver health and fights infections.

Almond oil (Oleum amygdalae) has been used for centuries in traditional medicine for its many health benefits. While scientific evidence is still limited, almond oil is known for its anti-inflammatory and immunity-boosting properties, as well as its ability to protect the liver. It is also believed to improve digestion and help reduce symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Historically, almond oil has been used in Chinese, Ayurvedic, and Greco-Persian medicine for dry skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema, highlighting its versatile and soothing properties.

Vaseline, also known as petroleum jelly, is widely used in cosmetics and medicine for its skin-protecting and moisturizing properties. Extracted from petroleum, it acts as an effective barrier to lock in moisture, soothe dry skin, and promote healing. Its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects make it valuable for treating minor cuts, burns, chapped lips, and diaper rash. Petroleum jelly is also effective for managing conditions like eczema and atopic dermatitis by improving the skin’s barrier function and supporting hydration. Affordable and versatile, it is a trusted remedy in skin care, especially for dry and irritated skin.

What are Wrinkles?

Wrinkles are visible lines or folds that appear on the skin. Fine wrinkles are typically less than 1 mm in width and depth, while coarse wrinkles measure 1 mm or more. They form due to internal factors like ageing, hormonal changes, and specific health conditions, as well as external influences like sun exposure and smoking. These factors cause the skin to become thinner, less elastic, more fragile, and prone to developing noticeable lines and creases.

Can wrinkles be completely eliminated?

No, wrinkles are a part of the natural ageing process and while there are multiple treatments available that can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, they cannot be fully eliminated.

Treatment options for wrinkles include injectable procedures, which have shown effectiveness in reducing wrinkles for a certain duration. Topical treatments, such as creams applied daily, may improve fine and coarse wrinkles but can cause skin irritation. Other methods like chemical peels, dermabrasion, and laser treatments are available, though their effectiveness and side effects vary, with some results being inconclusive.

Can applying a cream made from carrot juice, coconut oil, almond oil, and Vaseline every night before bed eliminate wrinkles overnight?

No, it cannot. The claim of overnight wrinkle elimination is highly controversial, as achieving such results overnight is not possible. While ingredients like carrot juice, coconut oil, almond oil, and Vaseline offer various health benefits, such as antioxidant properties, immune support, improved digestion, and antibacterial and antifungal effects, Vaseline, is known for locking in moisture and soothing dry skin, but there is no scientific evidence to suggest that these ingredients individually or combined can eliminate wrinkles overnight. Furthermore, there is no medical consensus affirming that applying these ingredients nightly can completely remove wrinkles overnight.

Regarding the role of carrots, a study published in the journal Nutrients suggests that consuming a methanol extract made from powdered red carrot (Daucus carota L.) cell lines (R4G) may help support healthy skin. Red carrots are rich in anthocyanins, which have strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that contribute to maintaining skin vitality and reducing signs of ageing. However, even this study does not mention anything about reducing or eliminating wrinkles overnight.

Furthermore, no study has identified the role of coconut oil in eliminating wrinkles. However, a review article published in the International Journal of Life Sciences mentions coconut oil's potential in delaying the appearance of wrinkles and skin sagging. Still, there is no evidence to claim that coconut oil can eliminate wrinkles overnight.

Similarly, no study has demonstrated the role of almond oil in eliminating wrinkles. While, a study published in Phytotherapy Research highlights that daily almond consumption may reduce wrinkle severity in postmenopausal women, indicating potential natural anti-ageing benefits, it also did not indicate that almond consumption can eliminate wrinkles in just one night.

Likewise, no scientific evidence supports Vaseline's role in eliminating wrinkles. A review in the International Journal of Pharmaceutical and Clinical Research notes that petroleum jelly protects skin from wind and cold and works as a moisturizer. Yet, there is no mention of its ability to eliminate wrinkles overnight.

Wrinkles are a natural part of the ageing process, primarily associated with growing older. As we age, the skin becomes thinner and less elastic, leading to the formation of wrinkles. While the mentioned studies highlight the individual effects of carrot juice, coconut oil, almond oil, and Vaseline in delaying or reducing wrinkles and moisturizing the skin for extended periods, there is no evidence of their combined role as a cream in completely eliminating wrinkles. Additionally, there is no scientific evidence or agreement within the medical community supporting their effectiveness in eliminating wrinkles overnight.

Dr Manjot Marwah, MD Dermatologist, Director of LHR Clinics (Punjab and Himachal), Founder of EnagenBio, told Medical Dialogues, "There is no cream or treatment in the world that can make wrinkles go away overnight. Not even Botox works overnight. Wrinkles are seen because of muscle movements on our faces and creams don’t even penetrate till the muscles so this claim itself is baseless. Moisturizers like coconut oil, almond oil or Vaseline only hydrate the skin while carrots have beta carotene which may help pigmentation over a period of time but has no effect on wrinkles at all."

Dr. Asha Zacharia, Consultant, Dermatology & Cosmetology, KIMSHEALTH Trivandrum, added "Cream containing carrot juice, almond juice, coconut oil and Vaseline have moisturising properties which helps in hydration to some extent but do not erase wrinkles which are due to loss of elasticity of the skin. Oil application can block the pores causing breakouts and also can cause irritation of the skin giving rise to a dull appearance."

Medical Dialogues Final Take

Wrinkles are a natural feature of skin ageing, appearing as lines and creases due to changes in skin structure over time. While ingredients like carrot juice, coconut oil, almond oil, and Vaseline may offer moisturizing and soothing benefits, there is no evidence supporting their combined use as a cream for the instant removal or complete elimination of wrinkles. Currently, no treatment protocol can achieve such results overnight.

Hence the claim that applying a cream made from carrot juice, coconut oil, almond oil, and Vaseline every night before bed eliminate wrinkles overnight is False
