Medical Dialogues Impact: NMC warns Medical Colleges against fake letters trap

New Delhi: Raising the alarm against fake letters issued in the name of the National Medical Commission (NMC), the Apex medical regulator has advised the medical colleges not to fall into such traps.

The Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) of NMC has issued such a warning after taking cognisance of the fake letter dated 03.02.2024 issued under the signature of the NMC UG Board. The concerned letter claimed that NMC allegedly initiated police action against a doctor, who works as a ghost faculty at a Sindhudurg-based medical college.

This letter soon went viral on social media. As soon as the Medical Dialogues team got a hand on this viral letter, it approached an NMC official to ascertain the veracity of the same. Responding to the queries, the NMC official immediately clarified that the communication in question was FAKE.

Now, after the clarification by the Medical Dialogues team, the Apex Medical Commission has also issued a notice in this regard. Referring to the letter in question, the Director of NMC Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) Shambhu Sharan Kumar mentioned in the notice dated 20.03.2024, "This has come to the notice of the Undergraduate Medical Education Board of NMC that a fake letter dated 03.02.2024 issued under the signature of the undersigned is circulating in social media. Copy of the same is annexed herewith."

Cautioning the medical colleges not to fall into such traps, NMC added,

"It is brought to the notice of all stakeholders that there is no such letter dated 03.02.2023 issued by UGMEB of NMC. All the stakeholders including Medical Colleges are hereby advised to not to fall in trap of any such fake letter(s),if the same is not received through dedicated email of UGMEB, NMC as well as by post from NMC."

The Apex Medical Commission reiterated that all important letters, Circulars, and Public Notices are posted on the National Medical Commission's website. Therefore, the Commission advised the stakeholders including the medical colleges to check the website of NMC to verify the genuineness of notices, circulars and letters. "In case of any doubt same be please be clarified from UGMEB of NMC," the notice mentioned.

"All concerned are alerted to reply upon genuine letters, circulars, and notices available on NMC website only. National Medical Commission shall initiate action under the relevant law against such fake messages in social media," the Commission added in the notice.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the alleged letter dated February 03, 2024, was issued in the name of the Director of the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) of NMC, Dr. Shambhu Sharan Kumar and it started circulating on social media platforms.

Writing to a doctor belonging to a hospital-based in Kolhapur, the letter in question mentioned how NMC is very serious to weed out Ghost/Part time faculties in Medical colleges and proposes strict action against doctors and Institutions engaging in such unethical practices.

The letter mentioned that NMC received a written complaint claiming that the concerned doctor was engaging in unethical practices of only attending NMC inspections OR attending colleges part-time once or twice a week or once or twice a month at a Sindhudurg-based medical college.

"Your case is being handed over to police and income tax authorities to investigate and report genuineness of allegations against you," read the letter.

"This is the last time warning to you to dissociated from medical colleges, if you are ghost, irregular/part time faculty and with active cooperation in creating fake fingerprints for AEBAS, Continuing being fake/ghost/Part time faculty will invite penalty as per NMC professional conduct rules causing suspension of registration and Jail term (Upto 4 years) under UIDAI act, as an accomplice to impersonation," the alleged letter stated.

"Your name has been forwarded to concerned authorities to take action, if you appear for any NMC inspections at ANY MEDICAL COLLEGES IN FUTURE, for further action as outlined above," the letter mentioned, adding "Please ignore this communication if you are not a faculty or not attached to any medical college."
