A rare medical mishap that occurred during a delicate medical procedure has come to light. The case involved a 62-year-old female patient scheduled for a percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) procedure. During this routine angioplasty, an unexpected complication occurred when the catheter being used broke, and a portion of it remained inside the aorta, the body's main artery.

In such complex situations, a tool known as a snare is typically employed to retrieve the broken object. Unfortunately, in this case, the retrieval process encountered further difficulties as the catheter inside the aorta broke into two pieces, and even the snare itself broke, leaving a fragment inside the aorta. The medical team made considerable efforts to address the issue, but given the increasing complexity of the situation, the patient was ultimately referred to Aakash Super Speciality Hospital in Dwarka, New Delhi, for further care.

To discuss this case in detail, the Medical Dialogues team interacted with Dr. Ashish Agarwal, Director of Cardiology at Aakash Healthcare Super Specialty Hospital in Dwarka.

In this video, Dr. Ashish Agarwal talks about case history, complications faced during surgery, and prognosis.
