Premature coronary artery disease (CAD) is an endemic in India. Researchers performed a study to identify risk factors, clinical presentation, angiographic findings and interventions in premature coronary artery disease.
Successive patients who underwent percutaneous intervention (PCI) accounting for a total of 1238 patients and very premature in 212 patients. In premature and very premature vs non-premature coronary artery disease, cholesterol, non-HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and tobacco use were higher while hypertension, diabetes and chronic kidney disease were more in non-premature class. Presentation as STEMI was marginally more in women with premature and very premature coronary artery disease and was significantly higher in men.
So the researchers concluded that in a country like ours, a third of coronary artery disease patients presenting for coronary intervention have premature disease. Important risk factors are high total and non-HDL cholesterol and tobacco (men). Extent and type of coronary artery disease are similar to non-premature coronary artery disease indicating severe disease.
