Over 46,000 MBBS, 24,894 PG Seats Added in Five Years: MoS Health

Altogether 46,163 MBBS seats and 24,894 postgraduate seats have been added across the country in the last five years, from academic year 2021-22 to 2025-26, the Union Health Minister Anupriya Patel informed the Rajya Sabha.

Apart from these, the Minister informed the parliament that a total of 380 MBBS seats and 2849 PG seats were lying vacant in medical colleges across the country in the academic year 2024-25.

22 New AIIMS, 75 Government Medical Colleges Approved Under PMSSY: MoS Health

Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav recently informed the Lok Sabha that under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, the establishment of 22 All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and the upgradation of 75 Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) have been approved.

The Minister said that the scheme includes setting up new AIIMS institutions, construction of super-speciality blocks, and strengthening infrastructure in existing Government Medical Colleges.

AIIMS Delhi Launches Face Transplant Programme, Offering New Hope to Acid Attack Survivors

The premier health institution, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, has become the first in India to launch a face transplant programme and is preparing to perform the country's first such surgery within a year, officials said.

The Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Burns Surgery at AIIMS has initiated the process of setting up a registry of patients having severe facial deformity along with the loss of vital functions of the face like breathing, mouth opening and blinking and have not benefited despite multiple surgical procedures.

Only Registered Doctors Can Perform Hair Transplants, Aesthetic Procedures: TN Medical Council

Through a recent public notice, the Tamil Nadu Medical Council clarified that only Registered Medical Practitioners (RMPs) with recognised medical qualifications and valid registration with the state medical Council can perform aesthetic and cosmetology procedures involving skin and hair, including hair transplantation and laser-based aesthetic treatments.

The council issued the clarification in line with the guidelines framed by the National Medical Commission (NMC) on control and regulation of Aesthetic Procedures in Skin and Hair, including Hair Transplantation, dated September 20 2022. These regulatory measures were instituted to address the increasing incidence of complications and fatalities arising from aesthetic procedures performed by unqualified persons and in unregistered or non-compliant clinical establishments.
