Years after the erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI) restricted the postgraduate medical diploma holders from joining medical colleges as faculties, the National Medical Commission (NMC), which replaced the erstwhile MCI, has proposed relaxation for them in the recently released Draft Teachers Eligibility Qualifications (TEQ) 2024 Regulations.
As per the recently released NMC Draft TEQ 2024 Regulations, Diploma holders appointed as Senior Residents before 08.06.2017 and continuously working as Senior Residents in the same institute shall be eligible for the post of Assistant Professor. Similarly, the Draft also allowed Specialist/Medical Officers in a Government Medical College for six years to qualify for the post of Assistant Professor.
Granting relief to a retired Senior Medical Officer who was employed under the Punjab Government, the Supreme Court recently set aside the order of penalty imposed on him in a disciplinary proceeding.
The top court bench comprising Justice Dipankar Datta opined that the disciplinary proceedings culminating in the order of penalty "were nothing but a ruse to wreak vengeance" for he had dragged high officials of the Government of Punjab to the High Court to obtain his legitimate monetary dues.

Granting interim relief to a government Medical Officer, the Jodhpur bench of the Rajasthan High Court issued a stay on the suspension order issued to him by the State after the doctor was arrested for allegedly helping the principal accused in preparing a fabricated marksheet.
The HC bench of Justice Arun Monga held that before passing the suspension order, the Government authorities should have placed the petitioner's case before the review committee.
In yet another case of violence against medical professionals, an on-duty doctor and a pharmacist of a Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Deriki were allegedly brutally assaulted by five intoxicated men who had come to the facility seeking treatment. The attack resulted in injuries to both the doctor and the pharmacist.
Based on the doctor's complaint, the police have registered a case under relevant sections of BNS against the miscreants and an investigation has been launched. However, no arrests have been made so far.
