Surge in COVID-19 cases: Hospital mock drills help identify preparedness, says Dr Randeep Guleria

Supporting the Centre's decision to order fresh mock drills in hospitals across the country to test their COVID preparedness, amid rising cases, former director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi, Dr Randeep Guleria on Thursday said the drills would be a timely test of the prevailing healthcare infrastructure and keep people in the loop about an outbreak.

"It is always better to be ready. Preparations should be complete. So, I believe that mock drills are always good because we test the system if there is any outbreak or surge in cases," Dr Guleria, who is currently the chairman, Institute of Internal Medicine, Respiratory & Sleep Medicine, Director-Medical Education, Medanta, said.

NMC issues Letter Of Intent to GMC Handwara, Udhampur for 100 MBBS seats each

With an aim to improve and upgrade the medical education sector in Jammu and Kashmir, The National Medical Commission (NMC) has decided to approve 100 MBBS seats each in two medical colleges namely Government Medical College (GMC) Handwara and GMC Udhampur.

A letter of Intent (LOI) has been issued by the NMC for 100 medical seats each at these two medical colleges in the state. Therefore, this is a major reason for the medical aspirants in the state to celebrate.

Smart bandage’ with biosensors could help chronic wounds heal, study claims

Most of the time, when someone gets a cut, scrape, burn, or other wound, the body takes care of itself and heals on its own. But this is not always the case. Diabetes can interfere with the healing process and create wounds that will not go away and that could become infected and fester.

These kinds of chronic wounds are not just debilitating for the people suffering from them. They are also a drain on healthcare systems, representing a $25 billion financial burden in the United States alone each year.

A new kind of smart bandage developed at Caltech may make treatment of these wounds easier, more effective, and less expensive. These smart bandages were developed in the lab of Wei Gao, assistant professor of medical engineering, Heritage Medical Research Institute Investigator, and Ronald and JoAnne Willens Scholar.

Delay in Caesarean Delivery: NCDRC upholds state commission order, doctor liable to pay Rs 3 lakh compensation for negligence

Observing that the doctor did not attend to the patient immediately when she was in severe labour pains but the patient was left in the hands of assistants who were neither qualified nor trained, the apex consumer court bench recently upheld the District and State Consumer Commission's order holding the doctor of guilty of negligence for the delay in performing the cesarean delivery.

The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) has dismissed the revision petition of a UP-based doctor, who was directed to pay Rs 3 lakh to the complainant after being held negligent by a district forum.
