Through a recent public notice, the Tamil Nadu Medical Council clarified that only Registered Medical Practitioners (RMPs) with recognised medical qualifications and valid registration with the state medical Council can perform aesthetic and cosmetology procedures involving skin and hair, including hair transplantation and laser-based aesthetic treatments.

The council issued the clarification in line with the guidelines framed by the National Medical Commission (NMC) on control and regulation of Aesthetic Procedures in Skin and Hair, including Hair Transplantation, dated September 20 2022. These regulatory measures were instituted to address the increasing incidence of complications and fatalities arising from aesthetic procedures performed by unqualified persons and in unregistered or non-compliant clinical establishments.
