Mumbai:  Taking strong cognizance of medical practitioners working with unrecognized postgraduate qualifications in the state, the Maharashtra Medical Council was recently seen grilling 53 " specialists" about their qualifications. Earlier the council had announced the suspension of 20 doctors in a similar matter

As per recent media reports, 53 Doctors who have acquired their Post-Graduate (PG) certificates from the College of Physicians and Surgeons have been summoned for questioning on April 21 by the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) regarding bogus certificates. If the allegations turn out to be true, fifty-three doctors could lose their right to practice.

The doctors who have called for the interrogation had registered for PG diplomas and fellowships with CPS in 2014-15. As per the MMC investigations, all of them failed the examinations but managed to procure passing certificates.

With the 53 doctors now being questioned by MMC for the suspected fake certificates for post-graduate courses offered by CPS, its role in the matter will also be probed.

The state medical council came to know about the matter in 2016 when they wrote to CPS president and asked for necessary documents. In the first round of inquiry, 20 doctors were found guilty of having procured fake degrees.

Of these 20 doctors, 19 were suspended from carrying out medical practice for one year, and one for five years.

Confirming the probe, senior MMC officials said it is an ongoing investigation. “We are looking at every year’s CPS data. We believe there will be more cases of fake certificates,” Dr Shivkumar Utture, MMC president told Mumbai Mirror.

The first batch of 20 doctors had confessed that they paid lakhs of rupees in order to procure fake PG degrees and they also named a middleman who is pediatrician by profession.

CPS president Dr Girish Maindarkar claimed of having no such association with the said pediatrician. Denying the allegations against the organization, Dr Maindarkar stated, “I was the one who helped students file a case against this middleman. My team or CPS has nothing to do with the fake certificates scam.”
