Higher Daytime Light Exposure Associated With Lower Dementia Risk: Study

China: A prospective study of more than 88,000 participants in the U.K. Biobank has found that greater exposure to daytime light was associated with a lower risk of developing dementia. Individuals receiving average daytime light levels above 1,000 lux—roughly equivalent to an overcast day outdoors—had a reduced dementia risk. Similarly, exposure to bright light for at least 42 minutes per day was linked to a lower incidence of dementia.
The findings suggest that improved circadian rhythm regulation may be one mechanism underlying this protective effect, highlighting the potential importance of regular daylight exposure for long-term brain health.
The findings, published in General Psychiatry by Nana Zheng and colleagues, examined the relationship between light exposure and dementia risk using objective measurements from the U.K. Biobank.
The study included 87,577 dementia-free adults whose daytime and nighttime light exposure was recorded over seven days using wrist-worn accelerometers. Participants were followed for a median of 8.1 years, during which 741 developed dementia.
The analysis found that daytime light exposure above 1,000 lux was associated with a significantly lower risk of dementia. Longer exposure to bright light provided additional benefits, with at least 42 minutes per day at 5,000 lux or higher linked to a further reduction in dementia risk.
Key findings from the study include:

- Exposure to bright light (5,000 lux or higher) for at least 42 minutes daily was linked to additional risk reduction.
- Protective associations were stronger among individuals with higher nighttime light exposure, an evening chronotype, or carriers of the APOE ε4 genetic variant, a known risk factor for dementia.
- Daytime light exposure showed a stronger association with dementia risk reduction than several established risk factors, including obesity, alcohol consumption, and traumatic brain injury.
- Nighttime light exposure was not significantly associated with dementia risk.
Further analyses suggested that circadian rhythm regulation and specific brain regions involved in cognitive and visual processing may partly mediate the protective association between daytime light exposure and dementia risk.
The authors noted limitations, including the healthier profile of U.K. Biobank participants, wrist-based light measurements, and the possibility that a 7-day assessment may not reflect long-term exposure patterns.
Despite these limitations, the findings indicate that greater daytime light exposure is associated with a lower risk of dementia. The researchers suggested that increasing exposure to natural or bright daytime light could be a simple, low-cost approach to support brain health and potentially reduce dementia risk, warranting further investigation in future studies.
