1,40,664 MBBS seats across 839 medical colleges for 2026-27, 1,27,028 renewed, 13,636 increased: NMC updates seat matrix

New Delhi: Altogether 1,40,664 MBBS seats are available in India for the academic year 2026-2027, according to the updated seat matrix released by the National Medical Commission (NMC) recently.

The latest seat matrix shows that 1,27,028 MBBS seats have been renewed, while 13,636 seats have been increased across 839 medical colleges in the country.

This marks an increase of 450 MBBS seats from the 1,40,214 seats listed in the NMC's previous seat matrix released on September 9. While the number of renewed seats has remained unchanged at 1,27,028, the number of increased seats has increased from 13,186 to 13,636.

The number of medical colleges covered under the seat matrix has also increased from 836 to 839, with three additional colleges being included in the latest seat matrix list.

Of the total 1,40,664 MBBS seats, 64,121 seats are in government medical colleges, comprising 61,185 renewed seats and 2,936 increased seats. Private medical colleges account for 76,543 seats, including 65,843 renewed seats and 10,700 increased seats.

This also includes 3,850 MBBS seats from 41 newly established medical colleges, comprising 850 seats in 13 government medical colleges and 3,000 seats in 28 private medical colleges.

Releasing the seat matrix, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of NMC issued a notice on September 21, 2026, "In continuation of the National Medical Commission (NMC) Public Notice dated 14.07.2026 and 10.09.2026 regarding updating of the Seat Matrix for Undergraduate (MBBS) Courses for the Academic Year 2026–27, for Undergraduate (MBBS) Courses for the Academic Year 2026–27 is enclosed herewith. The updated Seat Matrix incorporates the permissions granted for establishment of new Medical (MBBS) Colleges and increase in the annual intake capacity of existing Medical (MBBS) Colleges by the Medical Assessment & Rating Board (MARB), the 1st Appeal Committee, NMC, and the 2nd Appeal Committee, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoH&FW), under the relevant provisions of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019."

The Commission further directed all private medical colleges that have received permission to start a new MBBS college or increase their MBBS seat intake, but have not yet submitted the required E-Bank Guarantee, to submit it within seven days of the public notice.

Following this, the Letter of Permission (LoP) will be issued by MARB only after the receipt and verification of the requisite E-Bank Guarantee and confirmation that the same is in order.

"The enclosed Seat Matrix is subject to revision from time to time based on the decisions of the Appeal Committee, if any. The updated Seat Matrix, as applicable, shall be considered by the Counselling Committees of the Central Government and the respective State Governments for counselling and admission," the notice added.

In case any counselling committee notices any discrepancy or deviation in the approved Seat Matrix, the Commission asked to refer the matter to MARB for clarification.

It said, "No Counselling Committee shall, under any circumstances, permit admission against seats in excess of the number of seats approved and notified by MARB."

Providing necessary directions to all medical colleges, MARB further mentioned, "All Medical Colleges are advised to carefully verify the details pertaining to their respective institutions in the enclosed Seat Matrix for the Academic Year 2026–27. In case any discrepancy or omission is noticed, the same shall be brought immediately to the notice of the President, MARB, or the Director, MARB, for examination and appropriate decision, preferably before commencement of the counselling process. All Medical Colleges shall strictly ensure that admissions for the Academic Year 2026–27 are made only against the number of seats approved and notified in the Seat Matrix enclosed with this Public Notice, as amended from time to time, wherever applicable.  Under no circumstances shall any Medical College/Institution admit students in excess of its approved annual intake capacity. Any admission made in excess U-15029/09/2025-UGMEB I/3900130/2026 of the approved intake capacity shall be treated as non-compliance of the provisions of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, and the regulations framed thereunder, and shall attract appropriate regulatory and penal action against the defaulting Medical College/Institution."

Seat details

As per state wise details, 14,400 MBBS seats are available in Uttar Pradesh, 13,399 MBBS seats in Maharashtra, 14,299 seats in Tamil Nadu, 15,745 seats in Karnataka, 10,500 seats in Telangana, 8,280 seats in Rajasthan, 7,800 seats in Gujarat, 7,400 seats in West Bengal, 7,615 seats in Andhra Pradesh, 5,754 seats in Kerala, 6,120 seats in Madhya Pradesh.

Further, 4,710 MBBS seats are available in Bihar, 3,000 in Odisha, 3,110 MBBS seats in Haryana, 1,975 seats in Assam, 3,025 seats in Chhattisgarh, 1,850 seats in Punjab, 1,650 seats in Jharkhand, 1,750 seats in Jammu and Kashmir, 1,575 seats in Uttarakhand, 1,415 seats in Delhi, 1,880 seats in Puducherry.

A total of 871 available in Himachal Pradesh, 550 MBBS seats are available in Manipur, 500 seats in Tripura, 250 seats in Meghalaya, 200 seats in Sikkim, 100 seats in Nagaland, 100 seats in Mizoram, 250 seats in Goa, 177 seats in Dadar and Nagar Haveli, 200 seats in Chandigarh, 100 seats in Arunachal Pradesh and 114 seats in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Referring to this notice, NMC secretary Dr Raghav Langer, in a communication to all medical colleges, institutions stated, "Reference is invited to Public Notice dated 21-09-2026 as issued by Medical Assessment & Rating Board (MARB) of National Medical Commission (NMC) on the above subject matter [enclosed] being self explanatory interalia enclosing the Seat Matrix for Undergraduate (MBBS) Courses for the Academic Year 2026–27 as updated (as on 18-09-2026) which includes the approvals granted by MARB, 1st Appeal Committee-NMC and 2nd Appeal Committee-MoH&FW. The enclosed seat matrix shall remain subject to revision, if required, based on the decisions of the Appeal Committee or any other competent authority. The above said Public Notice indicate certain instructions/directions both for the Medical Colleges and the Counseling Committees for necessary compliance. All Medical Colleges shall strictly ensure that admissions are made only against the approved number of seats for the Academic Year 2026–27. Any admission made in excess of the approved intake capacity shall be treated as non compliance of the provisions of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, and the regulations framed thereunder, and shall attract appropriate regulatory and penal action against the defaulting Medical College/Institution. Accordingly, all Medical Colleges/Institutions and concerned stakeholders are requested to take note of the instructions/directions for compliance and necessary action on their part."
