New Delhi: Pointing towards the development of medical education in the country, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently stated that the Centre had added 60,000 more MBBS seats since 2014 to the existing 90,000 seats for the undergraduates and postgraduates in the country.

He further added that the the number of doctors that the country produced over the past 7 decades will be added to the health workers in the next decade alone.

The Prime Minister was speaking at the virtual inauguration ceremony of the second campus of Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute (CNCI) in West Bengal's Kolkata. During the event, he said, "The number of doctors that the country produced in the last 70 years, will be produced in the coming 10 years."

ANI reports that talking about the work done by the centre n the medical sector, the Prime Minister said that his government has added 60,000 more medical seats as well many more AIIMS.

"The number of medical seats of undergraduates and postgraduates in the country till 2014 was nearly 90,000. We have added 60,000 new seats in the last 7 years. In 2014, India had only 6 AIIMS. Today, the country is pacing forth toward having a strong network of 22 AIIMS," he said.

According to the data presented by MoS Health Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar in Lok Sabha in December last year, at present, there are a total number of 88,120 MBBS seats available in India for admissions. "The numbers of UG seats have increased by 72% from 51,348 before 2014 to 88,120 seats as of date and the numbers of PG seats have increased by 78% from 31,185 seats before 2014 to 55,595 seats including DNB and CPS seats," further informed the Minister.

As per the data earlier provided by the Health Minister before the Lok sabha, which did not include the DNB and CPS seats, there are a total number of 24,597 MD, 12,798 MS, 2,038 MCh, 2,365 DM, 922 PG Diploma seats in the country taking the grand total to 42,720 PG seats of which 26,711 are in the GMCs and 16,009 are in Private institutions.


During the recent event, Prime Minister Modi also said that the country will achieve the historical feat of administering 1.5 billion COVID vaccine doses in less than a year, today.

He said, "The country had started the new year with the beginning of vaccination of the youth from 15 to 18 years age group. Today, in the first week of the first month of the year, the country is achieving the historical feat of administering 1.5 billion COVID vaccine doses in less than a year's time."

The Prime Minister further said that the feat is a symbol of the self-reliance of India.
