AIIMS Kashmir Likely to delay MBBS Admissions this year

The is due to the fact that the institute does not a campus and required manpower yet. Even though the officials of the Health and Medical Education Department are waiting for the arrival of the central inspection team for finalizing a location to build a transit campus, the matter is getting delayed, adds Greater Kashmir.

As a result, the medical aspirants of J & K cannot get admitted to AIIMS Kashmir even this year as well.

Previously, there used to be a separate entrance system for securing admission in several AIIMS across the country. However, back in 2019, the separate entrance system was scrapped and NEET UG was made the only examination for securing admission to MBBS courses across India.

Accordingly, this year as well, the counseling for MBBS admission in various medical institutes across the UT is going to commence soon as per the J & K Board of Professional Entrance Examinations. In fact, the merit list for the same is getting prepared as well.

As per the latest media report by the Greater Kashmir, even though the seat matrix for the UT is yet to be published, the officials have opined that AIIMS Kashmir would not make it to the list of institutes admitting MBBS students this year.

The daily further adds that back in 2020, the J&K Government had taken up the initiative to set up transit campuses for AIIMS Kashmir and Jammu. This was done keeping in mind that even though the project completion date for AIIMS Jammu is 2023, and AIIMS Kashmir is 2024, transit campuses would help them to make the human resources ready for the upcoming institutes.

Accordingly, AIIMS Jammu had begun its journey in a guest house after the required inspection by the Central team was done and a nod was given for the same. After this, AIIMS Jammu started admitting 50 MBBS students, who are currently pursuing their education at AIIMS Rishikesh, the institute which is the mentor for both the AIIMS of the UT.

However, for AIIMS Kashmir, the central team inspection for finalizing a location for the transit campus is still due and as a result, students will have to wait to get admission in there.

Speaking to the daily regarding the matter, a senior official in the health department informed that many communications have been sent to AIIMS Rishikesh by the Government for giving nod to any of the buildings in Srinagar that have been shortlisted for acting as the transit campus.

"Earlier J&K was told that due to COVID19, a visit would not be possible. Now, we don't know what the reason for the delay is," the official told Greater Kashmir.

Meanwhile, while commenting on the matter, Dr. Yashpal Sharma, J&K Nodal Officer for new medical colleges in J&K informed the daily that he has already submitted all the required documents about the shortlisted sites to AIIMS Rishikesh.

"We have been told that the documents have been forwarded to Union Health Ministry and AIIMS Rishikesh awaits a communication from them," he said. He said that taking a batch of students for makeshift campus "may not be possible immediately" due to unpreparedness. "We can still hope that a new batch, if decided for, could be accommodated at some other medical college," he told the daily.
