Altogether 1,28,875 MBBS, 80,291 PG medical seats in India for 2025-26: Health Minister tells Parliament

New Delhi: India has altogether 1,28,875 MBBS and 80291 Postgraduate medical seats in Government and Private medical colleges across the country during the academic year 2025-2026, the Union Minister of State for Health, Smt Anupriya Patel, informed the Lok Sabha recently.

Further, the Union MoS Health informed the Parliament that four rounds of UG Counselling 2025 for MBBS seats have been completed as per the Supreme Court's order dated 16.12.2021 and the Academic Session for 2025-2026 has commenced from 22nd September 2025. A total of 72 MBBS seats in the All India Quota (AIQ) remained vacant in Government/Non-Government institutes after four rounds.

These details were shared by the Minister while responding to the queries raised by Parliament member Shri Bhausaheb Rajaram Wakchaure, who sought to know the details regading the number of seats available for teaching in various courses in Government and non-Government Medical Colleges/Institutes in the country as of date, the number of applicants received for admission to various courses in these colleges/institutes as of date.

Further, MP Wakchaure questioned whether all applicants have been admitted to these colleges/institutes and whether there are vacant seats in various courses in Government and non-Government medical colleges, and whether the Government has taken or is planning to take any steps to fill the vacant seats in these colleges and institutes.

MBBS seats:

As per the details shared by the Minister, India has 65193 Government and 63682 private MBBS seats. These seats include 3415 Government and 3800 Private seats in Andhra Pradesh, 1645 Government and 1900 Private seats in Bihar, 1555 Government and 900 private seats in Chhattisgarh, 1296 Government and 100 private medical seats in Delhi, 4325 Government and 3200 private seats in Gujarat, 1060 Government and 1650 private seats in Haryana, 820 Government and 150 private seats in Himachal Pradesh, 1525 Government and 200 Private seats Jammu and Kashmir, 855 Government and 400 private seats in Jharkhand, 4249 Government and 9695 Private seats in Karnataka, 1855 Government and 3549 Private seats in Kerala, 3025 Government and 2700 Private seats in Madhya Pradesh, 6075 Government and 6749 private seats Maharashtra, 375 Government and 150 Private seats in Manipur, 100 Government and 100 Private seats in Meghalaya, 1925 Government and 1100 Private seats in Odissa, 423 Government and 1450 Private seats in Puducherry, 999 Government and 900 Private seats in Punjab, 4630 Government and 2700 Private seats in Rajasthan, 5250 Government and 7800 private seats in Tamil Nadu, 4390 Government and 5150 Private seats in Telangana, 150 Government and 250 Private setas in Tripura, 5925 Government and 7500 Private seats in Uttar Pradesh, 750 Government and 700 Private seats in Uttarakhand, and 4129 Government and 2250 Private seats in West Bengal.

Meanwhile, several States do not have any private medical colleges and private seats. Among these, 114 Government seats are available in Andaman & Nicobar, 100 Government seats in Arunachal Pradesh, 1975 Government seats in Assam, 150 Government seats in Chandigarh, 177 Government seats in Dadra and Nagar Haveli, 200 Government seats in Goa, 100 Government seats in Mizoram, and 100 Government seats are available in Nagaland. Sikkim does not have any Government seats and there are only 150 private seats available in Sikkim.

"80291 post graduate seats include 17,707 in DNB, DrNB, FNB and Post MBBS Diploma seats also," mentioned the reply.

PG Medical Seats:

Among the PG medical seats, 2140 Government and 1679 private seats are available in Andhra Pradesh, 965 Government and 467 private seats in Bihar, 565 Government and 187 Private seats in Chhattisgarh, 2965 Government and 52 Private seats in Delhi, 2574 Government and 902 Private seats in Gujarat, 448 Government and 528 Private seats in Haryana, 303 Government and 93 Private seats in Himachal Pradesh, 730 Government and 52 Private seats in Jammu and Kashmir, 2470 Government and 5180 Private seats Karnataka, 1189 Government and 1003 Private seats in Kerala, 1720 Government and 1060 Private seats in Madhya Pradesh, 3836 Government and 3083 Private seats in Maharashtra, 800 Government and 612 Private seats in Odisha, 346 Government and 799 Private seats in Puducherry, 470 Government and 420 Private seats in Punjab, 2450 Government and 1319 Private seats in Rajasthan, 2901 Government and 2892 Private seats in Tamil Nadu, 1669 Government and 1855 Private seats in Telangana, 95 Government and 8 Private seats in Tripura, 2953 Government and 2362 Private seats in Uttar Pradesh, 1656 Government and 338 private seats in Uttarakhand, and 1851 Government and 377 Private seats in West Bengal.

Only Government PG seats are available in several States/UTs. This includes 13 seats in Andaman & Nicobar, 790 seats in Assam, 587 seats in Chandigarh, 44 seats in Dadra & Nagar Haveli, 156 Government seats in Goa, 289 Government seats in Jharkhand, 260 Government seats in Manipur, 37 Government seats in Meghalaya, and 10 Government seats in Mizoram. 34 Private seats and no government seats are available in Sikkim.

The Health Ministry data showed that this year, altogether 72 All-India Quota MBBS seats remained vacant. Among these 26 were Government and 46 were Deemed Institute's seats.
