Altogether 4,986 Seats in 47 Super-Speciality courses, max in Delhi: Health Minister gives Breakup

New Delhi: There are altogether 47 super specialty seats in India with an intake capacity of 4,986 Seats, Minister of State for Health, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar has informed the Lok Sabha yesterday. Among these, there are a total number of 31 Doctorate of Medicine (DM) course and 16 Master of Chirurgie (MCh) specialities.

Giving a breakup to the parliament, MOS Health shared the figures that showed that Delhi accounts for maximum number of DM/Mch seats at a count of 703, followed by Tamil Nadu with a tally of 671.

Besides, Dr. Pawar has further informed that the total number of medical colleges have increased by 67% with an increase from 387 before 2014 to 648 as of now. Similarly, the total number of MBBS seats have increased by 87% from 51348 before 2014 to altogether 96077 MBBS seats currently. 

In case of the PG medical seats, there has been a huge increase of 105% since 2014. While earlier there were 31185 PG medical seats in India, the number has increased to 64059, revealed the Union Minister of State for Health.

Dr. Pawar was responding to a number of questions concerning the promotion of special medical courses in India. The questions included the details of the list of special courses taught in the Indian medical colleges, the details of government and private medical colleges along with their intake capacity, the measures taken by the Government to increase the number of Surgical Oncologists and Regenerativem Medicine in India etc.

Replying to these queries raised in the Lok Sabha, Dr. Pawar informed, "As informed by the National Medical Commission (NMC), the Commission promotes special medical courses in the country depending on the requirement and proposals received from medical colleges/ institutes for starting of special courses. There are 47 super specialty courses including Surgical Oncology. Details are at Annexure-I. There is an increase of 67% in Medical Colleges from 387 before 2014 to 648 as of now. Further, there is an increase of 87% in MBBS seats from 51348 before 2014 to 96077 as of now and increase of 105% in PG seats from 31185 before 2014 to 64059 as of now. Also under PMSSY, funds are provided by Ministry to develop super Speciality Blocks to enhance internal care support and also increase the number of Postgraduate/Super Speciality seats in the country."

Among the 47 Super-speciality courses, there are 31 and 16 DM and MCh courses respectively. In case of DM (Doctorate of Medicine) courses, the specialities include Cardiology, Clinical Haematology, Clinical Pharmacology, Endocrinology, Medical Gastroenterology, Medical Genetics, Medical Oncology, Neonatology, Nephrology, Neurology, Neuro-radiology, Pulmonary Medicine, Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, Paediatrics Gastroenterology, Paediatrics Cardiology, Cardiac Anaesthesia, Hepatology, Organ Transplant Anaesthesia & Critical Care, Critical Care Medicine, Paediatric Hepatology, Neuro-Anaesthesia, Paediatric Nephrology, Infectious Disease, Virology, Paediatric Oncology, Geriatric Mental Health, Paediatrics and Neonatal Anaesthesia, Interventional Radiology, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology, Onco-Pathology, and Pediatric Neurology.

The 16 MCh courses include specialities such as Cardio vascular Thoracic Surgery, Urology, Neuro-Surgery, Paediatrics Surgery, Plastic Reconstructive Surgery, Surgical Gastroenterology, Surgical Oncology, Endocrine Surgery, Gynecological Oncology, Vascular Surgery, Paediatric Cardio Thoracic Vascular Surgery, Hepato-Pancreatto-Billary Surgery, Hand Surgery, Head & Neck Surgery, Reproductive Medicine & Surgery, and Paediatric Orthopaedics.

The MoS Health also shared the break up of the total number of medical colleges, MBBS seats, PG and Super Speciality seats. As per the data shared by the Union Health Ministry, there are altogether 648 medical colleges in India with an intake capacity for 96,077 MBBS seats, 44,804 MD/MS and PG Diploma Seats and 4986 Super-Speciality seats. Apart from these, there are 1621 CPS seats and 12,648 DNB/FNB Seats.

Among the 648 medical colleges, the maximum number of 71 medical colleges are in Tamil Nadu. Both Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh have the second highest number of medical colleges i.e. 67 medical college each. Maharashtra comes in the third position with 63 medical colleges. 

Apart from these, there are 32 medical colleges each in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and West Bengal, 8 medical colleges each in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, 2 colleges in Tripura, 41 medical colleges in Telangana, 30 in Rajasthan, 12 medical colleges in Punjab, 9 medical colleges each in Puducherry and Jharkhand, 15 colleges in Odisha, 4 in Manipur, 25 in Madhya Pradesh, 10 in each Delhi, Assam and Jammu and Kashmir, 13 each in Haryana and Gujarat, 14 in Chhattisgarh, 20 in Bihar. There are 1 medical college each in States/UTs including Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Goa, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Sikkim.

Regarding the 96077 MBBS seats, the highest number of medical seats are in Tamil Nadu i.e. altogether 10825 medical colleges. Karnataka comes in the second place with an intake capacity for 10745 MBBS seats. Apart from these, there are 100 MBBS seats in Andaman & Nicobar, 5485 seats in Andhra Pradesh, 50 in Arunachal Pradesh, 1250 seats in Assam, 2415 in Bihar, 150 MBBS seats in Chandigarh, 1765 MBBS seats in Chhattisgarh, 150 in Dadra & Nagar Haveli, 1497 seats in Delhi, 180 in Goa, 6200 in Gujarat, 1760 in Haryana, 920 in Himachal Pradesh, 1147 in Jammu and Kashmir, 930 in Jharkhand, 4355 in Kerala, 4080 in Madhya Pradesh, 9995 in Maharashtra, 475 in Manipur, 50 in Meghalaya, 100 in Mizoram, 2325 in Orissa, 1630 in Puducherry, 1750 in Punjab, 4405 in Rajasthan, 150 in Sikkim, 6040 in Telangana, 225 in Tripura, 9053 in Uttar Pradesh, 1150 in Uttarakhand, and 4725 in West Bengal.

The highest number of PG medical (MD/MS) and Diploma seats i.e. 5523 seats are in Karnataka. The second highest number of MD/MS/PG diploma seats are in Maharashtra with an intake capacity for 5297 seats. Apart from these, Andhra Pradesh has a total number of 2650 seats, Assam has 683 seats, Bihar has 1079 seats, Chandigarh has 460 seats, Chhattisgrah has 521 seats, Delhi has 2165 seats, Goa has 117 seats, Gujarat has 2306 seats, Haryana has 706 seats, HImachal Pradesh has 335 seats, Jammu and Kashmir has 567 seats, Jharkhand has 252 seats, Kerala has 1586 seats, Madhya Pradesh has 1834 seats, Manipur has 236 seats, Meghalaya has 33 seats, Orissa has 1029 seats, Puducherry has 869 seats, Punjab has 718 seats, Rajasthan has 2543 seats, Sikkim has 34 seats, Tamil Nadu has 4259 seats, Telangana has 2477 seats, Tripura has 85 seats, Uttar Pradesh has 3772 seats, Uttarakhand has 1811 seats, and West Bengal has 2004 seats.

In case of Super-Speciality seats, there are 157 seats in Andhra Pradesh, 55 seats in Assam, 60 seats in Bihar, 105 seats in Chandigarh, 37 seats in Chhattisgarh, 703 seats in Delhi, 14 seats in Goa, 126 seats in Gujarat, 23 seats in Haryana, 7 seats in Himachal Pradesh, 41 in Jammu & Kashmir, 11 in Jharkhand, 461 in Karnataka, 264 seats in Kerala, 79 seats in Madhya Pradesh, 380 seats in Maharashtra, 5 seats in Manipur, 2 seats in Meghalaya, 139 seats in Orissa, 58 seats in Puducherry, 36 seats in Punjab, 330 seats in Rajasthan, 671 seats in Tamil Nadu, 175 seats in Telangana, 263 seats in Uttar Pradesh, 581 seats in Uttarakhand, and 203 seats in West Bengal.

"Under National Health Mission (NHM), support is provided to the States /UTs to strengthen their health care systems based on the proposals received from the States so as to provide universal access to equitable, affordable and quality health care services all over the country including in underserved areas, including ensuring availability of doctors in the remote and underserved areas. Free Drugs and Free Diagnostics initiative provide essential drugs and diagnostics free of cost in public health facilities," Dr Pawar further mentioned.

"Under Ayushman Bharat, the Government is supporting the States for transformation of Sub Health Centres and Primary Health Centres into 1.5 lakh Health and Wellness Centres across the country for provision of Comprehensive Primary Health Care (CPHC) that includes preventive healthcare and health promotion at the community level with continuum of care approach. Further Ayushman Bharat, Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) provides health coverage up to Rs. 5 Lakh per family per year to around 10.74 crore poor and vulnerable families as per Socio Economic Caste Census (SECC)," added the Minister.
