Raipur: Bringing relief to the medical aspirants in Chhattisgarh, the National Medical Commission has given its nod to Ambikapur Medical College for admitting students in 100 MBBS seats.

The medical college had been waiting for the NMC nod for a long time. Rajmata Shrimati Devendra Kumari Singhdeo Government Medical College Ambikapur was established back in 2016 with an objective especially to take care of the health needs of the tribal-dominated region of Chhattisgarh. However, Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the National Medical Commission (NMC) had declared "Zero Year" at the Ambikapur Medical College for the academic year of 2019-2020.

Due to gross deficiencies at the medical college, the institute had received "Zero Year" twice in the past four years. One of the main reasons for this was that there was less than 20 percent lack of faculty and senior residents along with adequate infrastructure.

As per the latest media report by IBC24, now putting an end to the long wait, NMC, the apex medical education regulatory body has given its nod to 100 MBBS seats in Ambikapur Medical College for the academic year 2021-2022.

The NMC nod has come after a delay of three months and the admission process is expected to begin soon, adds the daily.

Following this, the state of Chhattisgarh has 8 functional government medical colleges. While six medical colleges in Raipur, Raigarh, Rajnandgaon, Bilaspur, Ambikapur, and Jagdalpur were already operative in the State, after the Government acquired the private medical college of Durg, the number became seven. After the NMC recognition for the Kanker Medical College, there are 8 government medical colleges in Chhattisgarh.
