29,470 BAMS seats in 419 Ayurveda Colleges in India

New Delhi: Currently, there are a total of 29,470 Under-Graduate Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery, BAMS seats in 419 Ayurveda institutes across the country.

The information was shared as a reply to the query whether the number of BAMS seats will be increased in the country as there is huge demand.

In his reply, the Minister of AYUSH Sarbananda Sonowal presented an overall data of BAMS seats in india as well as list of proposals received from various State Government and Private Parties to start new Ayurveda Medical Colleges as well as to Increase in intake capacity in existing UG (BAMS) course from the academic session 2021-22.

BAMS seats in India

The Minister of AYUSH Sarbananda Sonowal provided state-wise breakup of BAMS seats across Ayurveda colleges as per which there are 419 Ayurvedic medical Colleges in India having 29,470 BAMS seats for students.

The data suggests that the maximum number of BAMS seats are in Maharashtra with 5942 seats in 84 colleges; followed by Uttar Pradesh with 5678 seats in 70 institutes and Karnataka with 5565 seats in 78 colleges.

With over a decrease of 3000 seats, Gujarat comes 4th in the list with 2277 seats in 34 colleges; followed by Madhya Pradesh with 1830 seats in 25 colleges, Kerala with 1164 in 18 institutes and Uttrakhand with 1125 seats in 16 colleges for Ayurveda aspirants.

Punjab is recorded to have 1010 seats in 17 colleges followed by Rajasthan with 935 seats in 13 institutes and Haryana with 738 seats in 11 colleges.

The number then drops to 430 seats in Chhattisgarh at 6 institutions and 423 seats in 8 Bihar based Ayurveda colleges, 385 seats in 7 Tamil Nadu colleges, 345 seats in 6 Odisha colleges, 276 in Telangana with 5 colleges, 215 in 3 Andhra Pradesh colleges and 200 BAMS seats in 3 Delhi based institutes.

As per the data, Himachal Pradesh has 195 BAMS seats in 3 colleges, West Bengal has 175 BAMS seats in 4 institutes, Jammu and Kashmir has 153 seats in 2 colleges.

The states and UT's of Chandigarh, Puducherry, Meghalaya, Assam, Goa and Jharkhand have only 1 Ayurveda college each. Chandigarh has 100, Puducherry, Meghalaya, Assam has 63 each and Goa and Jharkhand have 60 BAMS seats each.

Proposals for More BAMS seats

Further, providing details on the proposals being received from various State Government and Private Parties to start new Ayurveda Medical Colleges as well as to Increase in intake capacity in existing UG (BAMS) course from the academic session 2021-22, the minister listed down the following plan and shared a data on the LOI and LOP issued to respective institutions.

Ministry of Ayush is considering to set-up North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Folk Medicine Research (NEIAFMR)with intake capacity of 30 Students in UG (BAMS) course at Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh.

In the Government order issued by the Government of Karnataka Health and Family Welfare it is ordered that in State Counseling 20 percent NRI quota seats are marked in the seat sharing.

State Counseling Authority of Gujaratis sharing 235 seats for NRI quota in BAMS course (self-financed colleges) and 482 seats in BHMS course (self-financed colleges).

In addition to this there are 12 seats in BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery) programme and 7 seats in MD/MS (Ayurveda) are available for foreign nationals at the National Institute of Ayurveda (NIA), Jaipur.

At Institute of Teaching & Research in Ayurveda (ITRA), Gujarat, 10 seats are reserved for foreign nationals.

At National Institute of Homoeopathy (NIH), Kolkata 06 seats are reserved for the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) nominee for BHMS (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery) courses and 10 seats for Nominees from Sri Lanka and 10 seats for WHO (SEAR) countries nominees. For PG Course: 02 seats reserved for BIMSTEC nominee and 02 seats for WHO South East Asia Region (SEAR) countries nominees.

Under the International Co-operation (IC), financial assistance is provided for setting up of Health Centers/ Institutions in foreign countries.

Ministry of AYUSH under Central Sector Scheme for Promotion of International Cooperation in AYUSH (IC Scheme) offers 104 scholarships every year to the eligible foreign nationals from 99 countries for pursuing Under-Graduate (UG), Post-Graduate (PG) and Ph.D. courses in premier Institutes in India, the minister added to his statement.

As per the data, 57 new proposals are being considered by the Ministry of AYUSH and  13 Proposals have been received for increase in intake capacity in existing UG (BAMS) course from the A.Y.2021-22.
