NCISM allows new Ayurveda colleges with 60 BAMS seats from 2026-27

New Delhi: The National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) has allowed the establishment of new Ayurveda colleges with 60 BAMS seats from the academic session 2026-27 onwards.

Issuing an office memorandum on June 3, 2026, the Commission said applications for setting up new Ayurveda colleges with 60 seats per year will now be accepted and considered, subject to fulfilment of prescribed requirements and statutory provisions.

Earlier, Regulation 58(1) of the NCISM (Minimum Essential Standards, Assessment and Rating for Undergraduate Ayurveda Colleges and Attached Teaching Hospitals) Regulations, 2024 allowed applications for new Ayurveda colleges only with intake capacities of 100, 150, and 200 seats annually.

"Regulation 58(1) of the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (Minimum essential standards, assessment and rating for undergraduate Ayurveda colleges and attached teaching hospitals) Regulations, 2024 provides as follows: The application for establishment of a new Ayurveda undergraduate medical college shall be for the intake capacity of one hundred, one hundred fifty and two hundred seats per year," the memorandum read. 

However, the Commission received representations from various stakeholders requesting continuation of the 60-seat provision. Stakeholders highlighted the need for wider accessibility, regional equity, institutional viability, and promotion of Ayurveda education.

Taking note of these requests, NCISM approved acceptance of proposals for 60-seat Ayurveda undergraduate colleges.

"The matter was taken up in meeting of Commission and in pursuance of the decision of the Commission, it is hereby stated that: Applications for establishment of new Ayurveda Undergraduate Medical Colleges with an intake capacity of 60 seats per year shall be accepted and considered from the Academic Session 2026-27 onwards, subject to fulfillment of the prescribed requirements and applicable statutory provisions," it added. 

NCISM further clarified that it has detail requirement for existing 60 seats institutions and the same will be applicable while processing the new proposals for 60 seats.

The Medical Assessment and Rating Board of Indian System of Medicine, NCISM will process and evaluate such applications in accordance with the above criteria and other applicable provisions of the relevant Acts, Rules, Regulations and guidelines issued by the Commission / Medical Assessment and Rating Board of Indian System of Medicine, NCISM from time to time. It will also collect applications and processing fees, FSD, etc as notified. 

"This order shall come into force with immediate effect and shall remain operative until incorporation of the aforesaid provisions through amendment in the relevant Gazette Notification/Regulations," mentioned the memorandum.
