Central Government nod to 606 PG Medical Seats in West Bengal
Kolkata: In a major boost to the postgraduate medical education in West Bengal, the Central Government has given its permission for around 606 PG medical seats in the State.
The Central Government nod for new PG medical seats has come for the new medical colleges including Diamond Harbour Medical College, Rampurhat Medical College, Deben Mahato Government Medical College, Raigunj Medical College and Cooch Behar Medical College.
These medical colleges have received the Central Government approval for adding 82 PG medical seats each, adds Millennium Post. PG medical seats are being introduced in all these medical colleges for the first time.
Medical Dialogues had last year reported that the State Government of West Bengal was working on increasing another 650 PG medical seats in different medical colleges. With this aim, the Director of Medical Education (DME) of the State, Debasis Bhattacharyya had written to the principals of the newly constructed medical colleges for submitting the necessary requirements for increasing the PG medical seats.
In this regard, back in December 2021, the State Health Department had written to the Central Government regarding the proposal for increasing the PG medical seats in the State medical colleges under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for upgrading the existing medical colleges.

As per the latest media report by Millennium Post, now the Central Government has given its permission for altogether 606 PG medical seats. Several new medical colleges including Diamond Harbour Medical College, Rampurhat Medical College, Deben Mahato Government Medical College, Raigunj Medical College and Cooch Behar Medical College have get approval for 82 PG medical seats each.
Several other medical colleges which are already running PG medical courses have also get permission for increasing their intake capacity. 82 PG medical seats have been added to Malda Medical College, 66 seats in Murshidabad Medical College, 48 seats in the College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital.
Recently, the MoS Health Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar informed the Parliament that West Bengal has altogether 2004 PG medical seats including 1801 MD/MS seats, 203 DM/M.Ch seats. Now with the Central Government nod, another 606 PG medical seats have been added to the seat matrix of the State.
