West Bengal plans to add 650 PG medical Seats at 17 institutes
Kolkata: Bringing good news to the PG medical aspirants in West Bengal, the State Government is working on increasing another 650 PG medical seats in different medical colleges in the State.
With this aim, the Director of Medical Education (DME) of the State, Debasis Bhattacharyya has recently written to the principals of the newly constructed medical colleges for submitting the necessary requirements to increase the PG medical seats, adds TOI.
In fact, the DME is going to arrange a meeting on Friday to discuss the matter as the most of the new PG seats is likely to be added to these medical colleges.
In December, last year, the State Health Department had written to the Central Government regarding the proposal for increasing the PG medical seats in the state medical colleges under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for upgrading the exiting medical colleges.
Earlier, the Chief Minister of the State, Mamata Banerjee had also raised the issue regarding the paucity of doctors and to be more specific the specialist doctors.
As per the data provided by MoS Health Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar last year, West Bengal has a total number of 1758 PG medical seats including 1628 seats belonging to Government institutes.
As per the latest media report by Millennium Post, now the proposal has been cleared by the Central Government and around 650 new PG medical seats are going to be added to the 17 medical colleges of the State.
However, there are plans for increasing some of the PG medical seats in the old medical colleges which have been functional for some time.
In case of IPGMER-SSKM, there will be new courses like nuclear medicine and sports medicine with four seats in each of these disciplines, adds TOI.
Taking note of the fact that emergency medicine is getting popular, the State DME has further proposed to add four seats in Emergency Medicine in Medical College Kolkata, CNMCH, RG Kar, NRS, Burdwan, Bankura, North Bengal and Midanpore medical college hospitals.
Apart from this, Geriatric care is also an important issue with the gradually ageing popularion and keeping this in mind, DME has plans for four new seats in geriatric medicine at NBMCH.
