Chennai: In a big relief to the Post-graduate medical aspirants who are not engaged in any services, the Tamil Nadu Government has decided to do away with the practice of collecting mandatory bank guarantees at the time of admission.

Now, instead of providing a bank guarantee of Rs 20 lakh to 40 lakh, the students will be required to submit an undertaking declaring that they would serve in the state for a certain number of years.

Such a major change has been enforced after State Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan on Thursday wrote to the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) and asked it to stop the practice, adds TOI.

Previously, the non-service candidates who aspired to pursue post-graduate and superspecialty studies in any of the state-run colleges were required to submit a bank guarantee of Rs 20-40 lakh.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, during the NEET-PG counselling process this year, hundreds of such students who were not in-service candidates had secured admission in PG and diploma courses in several top government institutions. This list included colleges such as Madras Medical College and Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital as well.

However, they were surprised when the State Government had made it mandatory for them to pay a bank guarantee before they could get admitted to their courses.
