Deficiencies Rectified at 4 TN medical Colleges, More MBBS seats sought

Such a confirmation comes from the Health Minister while he was addressing the press at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) on Thursday.

In fact, he further told the Hindu that already the Director of Medical Education has reached the National Capital with all the reports for requesting the Central Government for its nod to 50 MBBS seats in each of Namakkal, Ramanathapuram, Tiruppur, and Tiruvallur medical colleges. A request for re-inspection would also be sought for this from the Tamil Nadu Government.

This comes after recently the Central Government gave its nod for 850 MBBS seats in the State.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that after an inspection from the NMC, the Central Government has recently approved 850 MBBS seats in Tamil Nadu from this academic year itself. These additional seats are set to be added in seven out of eleven new medical colleges.

Newly established medical colleges in Virudhunagar, Kallakurichi, and Ooty have received the nod from Union Government to admit 150 MBBS students each. Apart from these, the medical colleges in Namakkal, Tiruvallur, Tirupur, and Ramanathapuram have been granted to fill 100 MBBS seats in each of these colleges.

Following inspection report by the NMC team, the Centre had also asked the State Government to upgrade the infrastructure, mostly civil works, in several medical colleges.

At that time, the State Health Minister Subramanian had said that most of the civil works were expected to be completed within ten days.

As per the latest media report by The Hindu, now the Health Minister has confirmed all those minor deficiencies, as pointed out by the inspection teams, in the Namakkal, Ramanathapuram, Tiruppur and Tiruvallur medical colleges have been rectified in the last ten days.

He has further informed the daily that the Director of Medical Education would soon submit the reports to the Union Government officials and request for additional MBBS seats in the remaining 4 medical colleges.

"The Director of Medical Education is in Delhi with the reports. He will be meeting officials of the Union government to urge them to grant approval for the remaining seats — 50 each in Namakkal, Ramanathapuram, Tiruppur, and Tiruvallur medical colleges — that have been kept pending due to minor deficiencies. He will seek re-inspections for the colleges in Dindigul, Krishnagiri, Nagapattinam, and Ariyalur," the State Health Minister told the reporters on Thursday.
