DMER Cancels admission of MBBS student, imposes Rs 10 lakh penalty
Aurangabad: An MBBS student belonging to the Latur-based Vilasrao Deshmukh Government Medical College and Hospital (VD-GMCH) has now landed in trouble with the Directorate of Medical Education (DMER) for allegedly securing his admission with the help of a fake caste certificate.
Issuing a order, the DMER has now directed the institute to initiate action against the student. The order has also mentioned that if the student has already completed his education then the Maharashtra Health Sciences University, Nashik, and the Maharashtra Medical Council, Mumbai shall be directed to cancel the registration of the student, adds TOI.
Apart from this, DMER has also instructed to recover an amount of Rs 10 lakh from the student for causing loss of a medical seat to an eligible candidate.
In the letter directed to VD-GMCH Dean, Dr. Sudhir Deshmukh, the DMER referred to the findings of the Aurangabad-based divisional caste certificate scrutiny committee given on 10.12.2021 and asked the dean for initiating action on it.
"As per the findings given by the caste certificate scrutiny committee, the admission given to the student in MBBS should be cancelled. If the student has already completed his education, a communication should be sent to Maharashtra Health Sciences University, Nashik as well as to Maharashtra Medical Council, Mumbai for seizing his degree as well as cancelling his registration," read the DMER order.
Pointing out that due to the cancellation of the student's admission, one MBBS seat would get wasted, the letter further added, "By submitting a fake caste certificate and obtaining admission in MBBS, the said student has deprived MBBS seat to a deserving candidate from scheduled tribe community. Due to this act, an MBBS seat going wasted and so an amount of Rs 10 lakh be recovered as fees from him."
The DMER also directed the dean to file a compliance report as soon as possible.
Confirming that the letter has been received, the dean of the institute told TOI, "We are looking into the matter."
As per the latest media report by the Times of India, a case concerning the medical student is already pending before the Aurangabad bench of Bombay High Court. Filing the plea, the student has sought a relief against the DMER order.
During the hearing of the issue on January 28, the HC bench comprising of Justice SV Gangapurwala and Justice S G Dige granted temporary relief to the student.
"The respondents (DMER, GMCH) shall not refrain the petitioner from continuing the internship only in the ground that the caste claim is invalid," read the HC order.
Speaking to TOI regarding the issue, a senior DMER official informed that the things would get more clarity only after the next date of court hearing.
