Delhi: Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) recently approached Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of Health and Family Welfare opposing a directive of the National Medical Commission (NMC) that mandates two years of Compulsory Rotatory Medical Internship (CRMI) for FMGs instead of one.
The NMC notification dated July 29, 2022 made two years of Compulsory Rotatory Medical Internship (CRMI) mandatory for FMGs instead of one. Anyone who earned their undergraduate degree and passed the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) on or before June 30, 2022, is subject to the new regulation.
Opposing the mandate, a team of FMG Doctors met the Minister of Health and Family Welfare on 6th January and requested a relaxation on the NMC directive. One of the doctors who attended the meeting informed that the minister has assured them that he will try to look into the matter and take necessary steps to insist on one year of CRMI instead on two years.
Dr Shahroz Khan, an FMG, posted on Twitter stating: '"A team of FMG Doctors met @mansukhmandviya in New Delhi to provide relaxation about 2yr CRMI & end this injustice so that we could achieve the dream to serve our motherland #FMGs #StopTargettingFMGs #MedTwitter #Doctors"
Dr Mohit Tiwari, one of the FMGs who attended the meeting told
EdexLive, " The meeting was great, and we got a 99 per cent assurance from the minister that there will be no two years of internship," says . He adds, "Dr Mandaviya also told us that the number of seats for internships will be increased and more hospitals will be added to the list."
"A petition has also been filed with the Supreme Court, so, if the NMC does not roll back the new regulations, we are hopeful, the court verdict will be in our favour," says Shahroz Khan.
Medical Dialogues previously reported that last year, in an affidavit on June 23, NMC had said upon qualifying the Foreign Medical Graduate (FMG) exam, such foreign medical graduates will be required to undergo a Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI) for two years instead of the existing one year norm as they would need an
extra year of CMRI training to make up for the loss and familiarise them with the Indian setting. Following this, back on October 21, 2022, NMC issued a public notice and referred to the queries regarding the medical colleges/ institutes allowed to conduct the CRMI programmes. Clearly, the NMC notice had put a question mark on the career of those medical graduates from abroad who had already got themselves enrolled for the CRMI programme and had to face one year loss. Protesting against this, hundreds of FMGs recently organized a protest in front of the NMC headquarters in Delhi.
However, the National Medical Commission has allowed that such Foreign medical graduates who have their Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship done/started by Foreign Medical Graduates in approved colleges/ hospitals/institutes according to old Medical Council of India (MCI) list on or before 21.10.2022 shall be considered valid by the National Medical Commission
