Srinagar: Bringing good news to the postgraduate medical aspirants, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has granted its nod for an additional 11 DNB seats to be added to Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag for the 2024 session.

With the NBE approval for these additional 11 seats, now the total number of DNB seats at the institute has gone up to sixty-three (63). 

Among these 11 DNB seats, 3 seats have been granted for the Orthopedics department, 3 seats for the Pathology department, 3 seats for the Microbiology department, and 2 seats for the Physiology department.

Commenting on the matter, the Principal of the Government Medical College, Anantnag, Prof (Dr) Anjum Farhana expressed appreciation for the pivotal roles played by these departments. She emphasized that these additional seats would not only enrich academic pursuits but they would also enhance the quality of patient care.

As per the latest media report by Daily Excelsior, the DNB Coordinator and the Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine, Dr. Azia Manzoor highlighted that this accreditation marks the eighteenth department at GMC Anantnag that has now been recognized by NBE. She also informed the Daily that GMC Anantnag is the only medical college among the new medical institutes, having the highest number of accredited DNB seats.

Meanwhile, the authorities at the medical institute mentioned that the accreditation showcases the institution's dedication to advanced education and training in diverse medical fields.

Speaking to the Daily, the Spokesperson for GMC Anantnag, Dr. Owvass H Dar added that the achievement on the part of the institute represents the medical college's commitment to better healthcare services coupled with the training of doctors.

He also emphasized the institute's commitment to transparency and effective communication with the public adding that the milestone reflects GMC Anantnag's pursuit in medical education and its contribution to shape a robust healthcare landscape, adds Greater Kashmir.

The Government Medical College in Anantnag, established in 2019, is affiliated with the University of Kashmir and is recognized by National Medical Commission. Last year, Dr Farhana took charge as the principal of the institute. She is the first woman principal of the college. It is one of the largest hospitals in Anantnag. The college offers 100 MBBS seats for its undergraduate medical course and additional nursing and paramedical courses.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that last year, the DNB junior resident doctors of Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag initiated a pen-down strike demanding the release of pending salaries. The protesting doctors alleged that they did not receive any stipend for five months since March 2023.
