Lucknow: In a major boost to the postgraduate medical education in Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow based King George's Medical University (KGMU) has recently earned the National Medical Commission (NMC) nod for 10 postgraduate (MD) seats in the Respiratory Medicine Department for the academic years 2022-2023.

The nod from the Apex medical education regulatory body NMC came after the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the Commission assessed the number of teachers, their experience, publications and other infrastructure.

Established back in 1905, KGMU has around 1250 undergraduate students (including 280 dental students) and 450 postgraduate students. The Respiratory Medicine department of this college has its genesis back 1946. Initially, the department started as a tuberculosis clinic with "Kasturba TB Hospital" which had a 40 bedded hospital attached to it. The MD degree course in tuberculosis was started in 1951 and subsequently diploma in tuberculosis & chest diseases was started in 1954.

Although KGMU was already offering the MD Respiratory Medicine course in 5 seats, with the nod from NMC for 10 more seats, the total number of seats has now reached 15.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of NMC has given its nod for these seats which will be valid for three years.

While commenting on this development, a senior faculty member at the Respiratory Department told TOI, "In the past 11 years, the number of seats has gone up by three-fold which is a great achievement for the department."

Medical Dialogues had last year reported that on the 75th anniversary of the Respiratory Medicine Department of KGMU, the authorities had decided to take responsibility of 22 children affected by Tuberculosis (TB). At that time, a new ICU was also inaugurated during the platinum jubilee celebration in the brown hall of the University. The newly set up ICU had aimed to engage in the treatment of patients suffering from severe respiratory disorders.
