Major Boost to PG Medical Education in Tamil Nadu: NMC nod for 88 PG, 14 SS Seats

Chennai: In a major boost to Postgraduate medical education in Tamil Nadu, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given its permission for 88 PG medical degree seats and 14 super-speciality seats to the State.

Among this, Tamil Nadu has received nod from the Apex medical commission for 85 seats in MD Emergency Medicine in 22 government medical colleges. Apart from this, the State also received NMC nod for three seats in MD Radio Diagnosis course, adds TNIE.

With this, the State has now the highest number of PG specialty seats, which has gone up to 2,264 from 2,176 seats. Similarly, the Super Speciality seats in the State has also been increased from 390 to 404 seats.

Confirmation regarding this came from the Directorate of Medical Education officials, who claimed that Tamil Nadu became able to bag the highest number of PG medical seats from the Apex medical education regulatory body because of the infrastructure available at the government medical colleges.

In this regard, the State DME data revealed that the newly added 85 seats in MD Emergency Medicine seats have been added to the institutes including the Madras Medical College, Stanley Medical College, Government Medical College, Sivagangai, Thoothukudi Medical College, Thanjavur Medical College, Chengalpattu Medical College, Government ESI Medical College, Coimbatore and KAP Viswanathan Government Medical College, Tiruchy. All these GMCs have received the NMC nod for five MD Emergency Medicine seats each.

While commenting on this, the Director of Medical Education, Tamil Nadu, Dr. R Narayana Babu informed the New Indian Express that this is the first time that the State is offering this speciality of MD Emergency Medicine and NMC has given its permission for the highest number of seats for this discipline to Tamil Nadu.

He further mentioned, "Emergency Medicine is a life-saving speciality required in treating critical patients. The State is already doing well in providing emergency medical services and this speciality will enhance it further."

Meanwhile, TNIE daily adds that the newly added three MD Radio Diagnosis seats have been added to the GKM Medical College, Salem.

Tamil Nadu DME has recently announced the seat matrix and tentative round 1 NEET PG Counselling schedule for PG Degree/Diploma courses in the Government and Private medical colleges in the State.

Medical Dialogues had reported that altogether 1510 seats are available for PG Degree/Diploma aspirants in Tamil Nadu. Among these, the Government Medical Colleges have 1121 seats, self-financing medical colleges have 347 seats, and Christian Medical College, Vellore has 42 seats.
