Massive bribery scam surfaces from UP's Medical College- MBBS students allegedly paid lakhs to get passing marks

Ayodhya: A massive MBBS bribery scam has come to light in Uttar Pradesh, where the MBBS students of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University (RML), allegedly paid Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh bribe to get passing marks through scrutiny in between 2013 and 2020.

Allegedly, apart from passing the failed students by taking bribes, there were instances of bribery and arbitrariness also in the process of setting up the examination centers.

After the matter came to light, serious questions are now being raised about the controllers of the examinations and the registrars of the RML University. The State Government has already taken cognizance of the matter and handed over the charge of the investigation to the District Magistrate of Ayodhya.

Writing to the Ayodhya DM in this regard, the Special Secretary of Administration Girijesh Kumar Tyagi has asked him to conduct a detailed investigation of the irregularities and corruption in Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University located in Ayudhya and submit a report within 15 days.

Navbharat Times has reported that the matter came to light after a resident from Barabanki had complained about the issue to the District Magistrate of Barabanki in November last year. It was alleged that the failed students of medical institutes affiliated to Avadh University were securing pass marks by paying bribes and their marks were increased from 20 to 60 after scrutiny. 

Consequently, the DM of Barabanki recommended a detailed investigation into the matter at the divisional level. In the report of the investigation conducted by Barabanki DM, serious questions were raised regarding the role of many examination controllers and registrars posted at RML Avadh University between the year 2013 and the year 2020.

Now, the Government has handed over the charge of the investigation of corruption and irregularities at Avadh University to the DM of Ayodhya. The current examination controller has also been brought under the scope of investigation assigned to the Ayudhya DM.

Reacting to the news, a doctor wrote on X (formerly Twitter), "If these fraudulently passed students are practicing today, who is accountable? No wonder why cases of Medical Negligence against doctors are rising. Quality of MBBS is declining day by day."
