Chennai: Medical and dental education in Tamil Nadu is likely to get more expensive since the Fee committee led by Justice K Venkatraman has decided to increase the MBBS/BDS fees in all the private medical and dental colleges in the State.

Therefore, the fee for UG medical and dental courses for all categories have gone up between Rs 35, 000 and Rs 1 lakh, reports TOI.

As per the new fee structure, announced by the Fee panel, the students getting admission in the private institutes must pay an amount ranging from Rs 4.3 lakh to Rs 4.5 lakh per year.

Among the private institutes, the fee structure of SRM Trichy Medical college witnessed the highest increase since the students getting admission in the college will have to pay Rs 4.5 lakh per year. Compared to the previous fee structure, the fees in this medical college has increased by Rs 55, 000.

Fees in Muthukumaran Medical College have been increased by the least amount. The students in this institute will Rs 4.3 lakh - Rs 35000 lesser than the last year.

Apart from these, the fees in 16 other institutes have been increased by Rs 50,000 for the government quota. In case of the management quota seats, the students will have to pay Rs 13.5 lakh and the NRI students will be required to pay Rs 24.5 lakh. Therefore, in both of these categories, the fees have been hiked by around one lakh than the previous year.

The rules specify that the vacant NRI seats will get transferred to the general pool as lapsed seats. In such cases the fees for these seats will come down from Rs 24.5 lakh to Rs 21.50 lakh.

The students admitted to the government quota seats in the private medical universities such as Srinivasan Medical College and Hospital under Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan University in Samayapuram and Sri Venkateshwaraa Medical College Hospital and Research Institute in Red Hills will have to pay Rs 5.4 lakh a year and the fee for the management quota seats in this institutes is Rs 16.2 lakh a year. While the fees for the NRI category seats is Rs 29.4 lakh, the students getting admitted in the lapsed NRI quota seats will have to pay Rs 25.80 lakh.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, the fee panel has decided that the selection committee will conduct admissions in the two new state private universities sharing 50% of the seats. The fees for these seats range between Rs 5.4 lakh and Rs 28.8 lakh.

Non-minority institutes in the State will have to share 65% seats with the government and the minority colleges will have to surrender 50% seats. For the remaining 35%-50% seats, the admission will be under the management quota, NRI and lapsed NRI quota seats.
