200 NEET aspirants get fake MCI SMS confirming MBBS admission, 2 held

The racket used to operate by sourcing the data of NEET aspirants via online and sending them forged SMS in the name of erstwhile apex medical body, Medical Council of India (MCI).

As of now, the STF has nabbed two of its members hailing from Purnia, Bihar. However, there are six others at large, the officials informed on Thursday.

As per the latest media report by News18, the two culprits who have been nabbed by Police are both former engineering graduates. They allegedly chose the course of fraud after they failed to find any jobs and gradually they duped several students belonging from States including UP, Bihar, Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, Jharkhand, MP, and many more. Promising the students MBBS admission, the racket used to extort different amounts of money from them- ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50 lakh and used to spend lavishly on luxuries.

One of the accused who has been nabbed by the police was previously arrested in a case of forgery back in 2013.

They had earlier duped a resident of Rewa promising that his son would secure an MBBS seat. After the student had appeared in the NEET examination, one of the accused allegedly contacted them as a career guide and asked them to come to Bhopal for the purpose of admission.

Afterward, the student was allegedly taken to New Delhi by the accused and they asked him to fill up forms of the central pool quota of MCI. As the family later received an SMS which appeared to be from MCI confirming the student's admission, the family paid Rs 36 lakh to the family. However, later the student didn't find his name on the admission list of Gandhi Medical College.

The daily adds that the gang allegedly deployed their own men in advance in several medical colleges as college officers and when the interested students visited the colleges they used to be convinced. Following this, the students used to hear from MCI via SMS and the racket used to get their money.

The STF SP has further informed the daily that the racket had allegedly duped many candidates who had secured MBBS admission on their own. In fact, the STF officers have informed the daily that the gang allegedly had links with the staffers of several medical colleges.
