Bathinda: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS Bathinda) has invited online applications for PhD Program July 2023 Session.

Application Fee -

1. General/OBC Category: Rs. 1500/- Plus Transaction charges as applicable.

2. SC/ST Category: Rs. 1200/- Plus Transaction charges as applicable.

The candidates need to fill out the online application form carefully. Further correspondence will not be entertained in this regard. The result of the PhD Program will be available on the website www.pgimer.edu.in & aiimsbathinda.edu.in. The results of individual candidates will not be informed on the telephone, and candidates are advised not to call the examination section for such information.

Documents to be attached with registration slip –

The candidates must upload their self-attested/attested copies of certificates/documents in support of their educational qualifications, marks, date of birth, category, experience etc. Suppose a candidate fails to upload self-attested copies of the abovementioned documents. In that case, their candidature will be cancelled, and they will not be allowed to participate in subsequent stages of the selection/admission process.

For Sponsored Candidates and Foreign nationals -

1. Sponsorship Certificate (in the case of the sponsored candidate) in the format prescribed in the Prospectus, duly completed and signed by the competent authority.

2. NOC from the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare in the case of Foreign Nationals.

Eligibility open candidates –

1. Medical qualification: MBBS/BDS with minimum 55% aggregate marks or MD/MS/MDS/DM/MCH in the subject concerned or Diplomat of National Board of Examination. Candidates who have obtained these degrees from medical colleges not recognized by the Medical Council of India Shall not be eligible to apply.

2. For Non-Medical/Life Sciences: A Postgraduate degree of Master of Science (M.Sc) or Master in Veterinary Science (M.V.Sc.) or M.Sc. (Laboratory Technology) in subjects allied to Medical Sciences such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Human Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Immunology, Life Sciences including Botany, Zoology, Genetics, Cell Biology, Pharmacology, Pharmacy, Organic Chemistry, Anthropology & M.Sc (Human Genomics) and ME/M.Tech.

3. The candidates with the following qualifications will be eligible: Those who have passed M.Sc/MA/Masters in Engineering or its equivalent/ examination with at least 60 % marks in the subjects mentioned below: from the colleges/institutes/Universities recognized by the UGC are eligible.

4. For non-medical candidates' eligibility shall be a master's degree (two years course) awarded by Indian Universities or equivalent in the subject as per the requirement of the project/department.

Candidates possessing a Master's Degree through distance learning courses will not be eligible. While seeking project details from the department, desired qualification of a Master's Degree to be suitable for project work should be mentioned by the respective department.

As regards the eligibility of the candidates having their fellowship with stipends from various funding agencies or qualified for any national level examination listed below, the candidates will be exempted from appearing in the entrance exam. An attested copy of the result/fellowship award letter must be attached.

Candidates with a fellowship from a project (Either independent or in Extramural Project are NOT exempted from the entrance examination (CBT).

Candidates working under Central Govt./Semi Govt./Autonomous organization should submit their applications through the proper channel, i.e. employer. They will be required to submit a 'No Objection Certificate" from their employer before they are allowed to join the PhD Course.

Requirements for admission of foreign nationals –

1. Foreign Nationals shall be required to fill in the prescribed application form indicating the choice of subject (only one subject) for admission to courses leading to the award of a PhD degree.

2. Foreign nationals are required to send their applications through Diplomatic Channel. They shall also be required to appear in the Competitive Entrance Examination with other candidates.

3. Seats shall not be reserved in any discipline for foreign nationals (except the bilateral agreement between the Government of India and any other nation)

Institute fellowship shall not be provided to Sponsored/Foreign candidates.

Method of selection –

Selection for PhD registration will be through performance evaluation as under - 

Part-I: Method of selection, i.e. aptitude test comprises (a) General Science, (b) English, (c) Biostatistics & Research Methodology (d) Mental Ability of a total of 40 marks. All questions in this part are compulsory, each with one mark.

Part-II: Stream Specific (Medical, Non-Medical (Life Science and Social Behavioral Sciences), exam. There will be 100 questions of various disciplines, and the candidates must attempt 40.

The theory paper will have a negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer.

Candidates scoring the below-mentioned minimum marks in the aptitude test and speciality-specific theory test (combined) will be eligible to appear in counselling for enrollment to PhD program -

1. General/OBC/Spon/FN category marks - 40

2. SC/ST category marks – 36

Candidates who fail to attend the abovementioned examinations will not be eligible for admission. After the entrance examination, results will be declared in mid-January and end-July. After the declaration of results, selection letters will be issued by the Academic Section to only those candidates who have submitted undertaking/ Certificate of proof of their funding sources through the concerned Head of the departments. Out of the candidates who secured 50 per cent (40 marks or 36 marks in case of SC/ST) above in the written test or a minimum 3 times the number of seats advertised will be called for counselling.

Admission to the PhD Course will be subject to the availability of research funds/fellowship grant from recognized funding agencies.

Rules for admission for in-service candidates-(medical) –

Medical faculty members can apply for registration to PhD Courses as in-service candidates. They will be exempted from appearing in the entrance examination.

The individual should be a regular institute employee and have rendered at least two years of continuous service.

The individual should have at least 5 years of active service left in the institute at the time of application.

The medical faculty member should have at least 3 original research publications (not case reports) during the last three years immediately preceding the date of their application, either as a first author or as a communicating author in a peer-reviewed journal.

The candidate will be considered an in-service candidate provided that the Head of the Department should certify that the work of the Department will not suffer and no additional staff will be asked for.

The candidate seeking admission under this category will have to identify a faculty member in the same Department (senior to the candidate) who is willing to be the chief guide of the candidate. The candidate should submit a letter of acceptance/undertaking from the concerned faculty member.

Each case will be considered by a specially constituted ad hoc committee comprising of -

1. Dean (Academic) – Chairman

2. Dean (Research)

3. Head of the Department of the parent Department where the candidates wish to register for the PhD

4. The faculty member who has consented to be the chief guide of the candidate

5. Two nominees of Dean from other related departments

6. Associate Dean (Academic) & Registrar- (Member Secretary)

One out of five faculty members in a particular Department can be registered as PhD candidates, and not more than three candidates at a given time should be registered as PhD candidates in a particular Department.

The candidate seeking admission under this category will only be registered for PhD in the same department where they work.

These guidelines will not apply to other staff members employed under various research schemes on a tenure basis.

The medical faculty members who have registered themselves as candidates will not be eligible to guide/co-guide of any other PhD candidate in the institute till they complete the PhD. Howevertheyhe can continue to be a guide/co-guide for MD/MS/MDS/DM/MCh/MSc candidates.

Senior Demonstrators in pre & para-clinical departments will be eligible for PhD registration. However, they must appear as an open candidate in the entrance examination.

Suppose the faculty member registering for PhD is already a Chief guide to other PhD candidates. In that case, he/she should surrender the guideship to the co-guide before taking up the PhD registration for themselves.

Rules for admission for in-service candidates (non-medical) –

1. The individual should be a regular institute employee and have rendered at least five years of continuous service.

2. He/she fulfils all the eligibility criteria for the PhD course, will appear in the entrance examination and must score a minimum of 50% marks.

3. The individual should remain in the institute for 5 years of active service.

4. The candidate should have a proven track record of active involvement in the research/academic activities of the department. They should possess good written and verbal communication skills in the English language to be certified by the HOD/Chief of the Center.

5. The candidate should have at least 3 original research publications (not case reports) during the three years immediately preceding the date of their application, either as a first author or as a communicating author in a peer-reviewed journal.

6. The candidate will be considered an in-service candidate provided that the Head of the Department should certify that the work of the Department will not suffer and no additional staff will be asked for.

7. The candidate seeking admission under this category will have to identify a faculty member in the institute who is willing to be the Chief- guide of the candidate. The candidate should submit a letter of acceptance/undertaking from the concerned faculty member.

Duration of the program –

1. The course's duration shall be the period from registration to submission of the thesis.

2. The minimum registration period for all the candidates who are registered for PhD will be three years. The maximum period of registration will not exceed five years. Extension beyond 5 years can be given for a maximum period of 6 months on the recommendation of DC and final approval by the Dean/Director.

3. Further extension beyond 5 years & 6 months can only be given by the Academic Committee for a maximum period of 6 months in highly exceptional circumstances (like medical exigencies, Natural calamities etc.), and such extension may not be given retrospectively.

4. The Chief guide of PhD student shall give a clear reason for the delay to the Academic Committee and must present the case before Academic Committee.

5. In case of extension beyond 6 years without justifiable reason and circumstances as mentioned above, the PhD registration of the candidate shall be cancelled.

6. Failure to submit the thesis within the maximum 5 yrs. With extension after approval up to 5 ½ years (6 years in exceptional circumstances by prior approval of the Academic Committee) shall lead to the cancellation of PhD registration of the candidate.

All fees and dues are payable at the time of admission. The hostel security deposit (refundable), i.e. Rs. 1000/-. Fees and other charges, including hostel rent, once paid, will not be refunded in any case, and no correspondence will be entertained in this connection.

Institute funds for PhD work –

Institute funds will be available for PhD students to buy essential consumables in case of delay in releasing funds from the sponsoring agencies to carry out the essential research work. The research section for the intramural research grants for faculty members will manage this fund. The Chief Guide/faculty in charge will apply for this fund under the following modalities -

1. Faculty members should apply to Research Section for funds for PhD students under the existing scheme of intramural research grants. Additional funds will be provided to Research Section for PhD research funding.

2. Research protocol, detailed budgetary requirements etc., should be submitted to the research section.

3. The same procedure for intramural research grants would be followed for such requests & funds would be disbursed through the research section with information to the academic section.

4. Faculty members of all ranks shall be eligible to apply for grants.
