Andhra Pradesh: To boost medical education in Andhra Pradesh, the state government has decided to start MBBS admissions at Piduguralla Government Medical College from the 2026-27 academic year.

The Health Department has submitted a proposal in this regard, which has also been approved by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

The state government will construct and operate the medical college under a centrally sponsored scheme (CSS). The government stated that the central government has approved and released ₹195 crore for this purpose.

Along with this, the Chief Minister also approved the creation of the necessary infrastructure and recruitment of staff to facilitate 100 MBBS admissions in the first phase. According to the existing National Medical Commission (NMC) regulations, a teaching hospital with at least 420 beds is required to admit 100 MBBS students.

Meanwhile, a press release was issued recently, in which the Health Minister stated that the Chief Minister has approved the recruitment of approximately 600 staff members for the teaching hospital, in addition to 237 doctors and other essential staff for the medical college, reports TOI

Referring to the revised NMC regulations notified in 2023, the Health Minister stated that a teaching hospital with 620 beds must be ready when applying for approval to admit 150 MBBS students. Accordingly, the Health Minister said that the Piduguralla Medical College will start with 100 MBBS seats, and further steps will be taken to obtain approval for additional seats.

Recently, Clarifying that an MBBS batch, after being permitted or renewed annually, will be considered recognised and the MBBS seats permitted will be recognised seats, the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) of the National Medical Commission (NMC) has asked all the medical colleges teaching MBBS courses not to send proposals for recognition of MBBS seats.

The UG Board of NMC issued the clarification on 07.01.2025 after receiving applications from some medical colleges/institutions for recognition, along with fees, requesting the recognition of the MBBS course with the specified annual intake permitted to be offered by them.
