Andhra Pradesh: 784 PG doctors to join secondary, teaching hospitals from January 1

Vijayawada: A total of 784 postgraduate (PG) doctors will be posted as senior residents in secondary and teaching hospitals across Andhra Pradesh for a mandatory one-year service starting January 1, 2025. The service period will include six months in teaching hospitals and six months in secondary hospitals.

Out of the total, 393 doctors will be posted across 102 regional, social and district hospitals, while the rest will serve in 17 teaching hospitals. The postings will be done through an online counselling system, with no human involvement, to ensure transparency.

The senior residents will be paid a monthly honorarium of Rs 80,500, as per GO No 723 issued on December 4, 2024.

As per TOI media report, these 784 PG doctors belong to 23 specialities, including General Medicine (110), General Surgery (91), Gynaecology (87), Anaesthesiology (81), Paediatrics (58), Orthopaedics (53), along with departments such as Radiology, Ophthalmology, ENT, Dermatology, and non-clinical PG courses.

On Wednesday, Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav told PTI that doctors who secured admission under the state convener quota in government and private medical colleges during the 2022-23 academic year and have completed their PG courses are required to mandatorily serve for one year in regional, social, district, and teaching hospitals.

He added that registration was open till December 29, and doctors who received postings must report for duty by January 5. The minister also clarified that senior resident services will be provided in hospitals every year as a policy, regardless of vacancies.

Meanwhile, Director of Medical Education (DME) Dr Raghunandan warned that doctors who fail to complete the mandatory service will have to pay a penalty of up to Rs 40 lakh, as mentioned in the bond signed at the time of admission.

Medical Dialogues in 2024 reported that doctors getting admitted to PG medical courses (degree and diploma) in the Competent Authority Quota seats at Andhra Pradesh-based Dr NTR University of Health Sciences will have to compulsorily serve the State Government or pay a penalty of Rs 40 lakh and Rs 50 lakh.

In the case of service candidates, they will have to serve the State Government for a minimum period of 10 years after completion of in-service PG Degree/Super Speciality course in any Government institution/health facility of the State. For them, the amount of bond penalty is Rs 50 lakh, in addition to the pay and allowances received during the years of study.
