Ahmedabad: In an incident of cyber fraud reported from the city, an unknown con artist posing as a representative of a firm duped a doctor of Rs Rs 30 lakh on the pretext of providing his son with a medical seat at a private college in Bengaluru.

The doctor has been identified as an ophthalmologist who lives at Narayankrupa Arcade on Prahladnagar Garden Road.

An FIR has been registered at the cybercrime police for breach of trust, cheating, forgery and producing forged documents as a genuine and criminal conspiracy against the con artist and other unknown persons.

The son of the doctor aged 19 had cleared the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and was in search of getting admission to a private college since he did not make it to a government college.

As a result, several private agencies began approaching the doctor promising an MBBS seat for his son. According to the TOI media report, it came to light that the son of the doctor applied to three government colleges but failed to secure a seat after two rounds.

As many private agencies began to approach the doctor, he rejected them based on the location of the private colleges. In March, last year, an unknown man contacted him and said that he could secure his son a medical seat at a medical college.

The man introduced the company called PNPLRC which facilitates MBBS admissions between medical colleges and students. After finding out that the company was based in Hyderabad, he called a representative of the company seeking an MBBS seat at a college called Akash Institute of Medical Science and Research Centre in Bengaluru for his son.

He was told to reach the office after the admission procedure for the college would start on March 29, 2022. On March 31, the doctor and his son went to the office in Hyderabad and paid Rs 20 lakh paid in advance for the entire course against Rs 65 lakh asked by the representative.

The amount was paid in three instalments in which Rs 9.95 lakh was transferred through a real-time gross settlement (RTGS) on March 31. The second instalment took place on April 4, Rs 8 lakh was transferred to the company and the third instalment was done when a man from the company visited the doctor's house on March 5 and took Rs 12 lakh cash.

Therefore, the duo later thought that the admission would be done at their preferred college. Following this, they went to the college for admission and were shocked when their admission was cancelled.

The duo tried to reach the representatives of the firm but all of their phones were switched off. After failing several attempts to reach them, they approached the cybercrime police.

A case was registered against the unknown accused and an investigation is underway.

While investigating the case, the police found that the firm office in Hyderabad was a fraud since it was found to be shut down. Moreover, their website was also dysfunctional.
