Maharashtra: Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) has invited applications for Certificate Course in Genetic Diagnostics and Fellowship in Clinical and Laboratory Genetics for the academic year 2023 -24. Both the courses will be conducted by University at MUHS GeneHealth, Shivaji Nagar, Pune.

Candidates have to submit one set of self-attested photocopies of Certificates / Documents along with a print copy of the application form by post / by hand to The Head of Department, Maharashtra University of Health Sciences Regional Center Pune, Aundh Civil Hospital, 3rd Floor, Aundh Camp, Pune 411027. All the original documents should be brought for verification (if selected) at the time of admission

The information Brochure and application form are available on the University website (htpp://www.muhs.ac.in). The candidates are requested to print and fill out the application form.

The following documents are required to be submitted along with the application form –

1. Degree Certificate of qualifying examination

2. Experience Certificate

3. Details of the online transaction of application fees

4. SSC Certificate

5. HSC Mark sheet

6. First to final year mark sheet of qualifying degree

7. For In-service candidate NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the concerned authority (If applicable)

Certificate Course in Genetic Diagnostics is conducted to develop competent genetic support specialists trained in the performance of various genetic diagnostic techniques to assist clinicians with identifying abnormalities within samples to help them determine the cause or risk of disease. And Fellowship in Clinical and Laboratory Genetics is conducted to develop competency in a clinician in clinical diagnosis, laboratory testing, counseling, and management of genetic disorders.

Objectives –

Certificate Course in Genetic Diagnostics –

1. Perform various functions related to collecting samples and preparing and examining specimens.

2. know about the Collection, transportation, and storage of various types of Genetic samples.

3. Preparing and performing routine lab work for genetic diagnosis.

4. Record results for the lead researcher or doctor to assess.

5. Acquire knowledge of quality control and accreditation procedures like NABL CAP etc., along with legal and ethical responsibilities and guidelines.

Fellowship in Clinical and Laboratory Genetics –

1. To elicit medical history about complaints and symptoms, developmental and reproductive history, and family history related to hereditary disorders.

2. To examine a patient with a suspected genetic/genetic disorder to consider differential diagnosis for common and rare genetic conditions.

3. To suggest and recommend routine and specialty genetic investigations.

4. To correlate investigation with the patient's condition and arrive at a final diagnosis which will involve interpretation and explanation of the results of genetic tests

5. Management of common and rare conditions.

6. To identify problems that will require management by other specialists.

7. Planning consultations with relevant specialties and investigations and pre-test counseling.

8. Genetic counseling of patients/ families.

9. Develop good skills, knowledge, and expertise in laboratory genetics.

10. Working knowledge of the use of human genetic databases.

11. To undertake research in genetics.

12. Provide psychosocial support to patients and families.

13. Acquire knowledge of legal and ethical aspects of clinical and laboratory genetic practices.

14. To acquire knowledge of bioinformatics, research methodology, and biostatistics as related to clinical and laboratory genetics.

Eligibility –

Certificate Course in Genetic Diagnostics –

Eligible candidates will have any of the following qualifications –

1. MSc (life sciences)

2. MBBS

3. B Tech (life sciences)

4. B Pharm

5. BAMS

6. BHMS

7. BDS

8. BUMS

9. BSc PMT

Fellowship in Clinical and Laboratory Genetics –

Candidates who have passed the following programs with a minimum of 40% marks will be eligible for the course -

1. Medical MD/MS

2. MBBS with Diploma in Pathology, Obstetrics/ Gynecology, Pediatrics, Microbiology, Clinical Pathology

3. DNB

4. MD [MS Ayurved Clinical Specialty

5. MD Homoeopathy Clinical Specialty

6. MD Unani Clinical Specialty

A total of 25 seats are available for both the courses. The certificate Course in Genetic Diagnostics has 20 seats, and Fellowship in Clinical and Laboratory Genetics has 5 seats. The Genetic Diagnostics course is for 6 months duration.

Proposed teaching and learning methods –

Certificate Course in Genetic Diagnostics –

1. Didactic lectures: To be delivered either by a faculty member or by a specialist in the field of genetics or allied disciplines. 4 months of full-time coursework and hands-on training will be provided.

2. Internal and Practical Exams will be conducted at the end of 3 months and 6 months of training.

3. Candidates are required to present 1 journal club every month.

4. Each student must maintain a journal and record 10 cases.

5. Each student is expected to maintain a laboratory logbook.

6. Project work: Each candidate must undertake a project on a topic decided after consultation with the guide. This topic is required to be approved by the institutional ethics committee. The project work will be submitted as a thesis at the end of 6 months of the course. The award of the certificate is subject to the successful completion of the project and approval of the thesis by experts.

Fellowship in Clinical and Laboratory Genetics –

Course design -

1. Course with various exit options: As per the new National Educational Policy (NEP), this course is thus designed as a 1-year fellowship course with exit options at six months (credit option) and one year (Fellowship).

2. Didactic lectures: To be delivered either by a faculty member or by a specialist in the field of genetics or allied disciplines. 4 months of full-time coursework and hands-on training will be provided.

3. Rotations: 2 months Rotations in each specialty, Exit with credit optional, Record log book.

4. Specialty-based OPD observation: 6 months

5. Internal and Practical Exams will be conducted at the end of 3 months and 6 months of training.

6. Candidates are required to present 1 seminar and 1 journal club every month.

7. Candidates must attend one national-level conference and paper/poster presentation.

8. Case Presentation: This will be held every month during six months of specialty training. Experts from other specialties may be called for these discussions.

9. Each student must maintain a journal and record 10 cases.

10. Each student is expected to maintain a laboratory logbook.

11. Project work: Each fellowship candidate must undertake a project on a topic decided after consultation with the guide. This topic is required to be approved by the institutional ethics committee. The project work will be submitted as a thesis at the end of the 10 months of the fellowship. It will undergo evaluation by 3 independent experts from within the institution, who will then grade it. Award of the certificate of fellowship is subject to the successful completion of the project and approval of the thesis by experts.

12. The candidate will attend any one of the following Annual conferences: Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Indian Society of Human Genetics (ISHG), Indian Society for Prenatal Diagnosis and Therapy (ISPAT), or any other conference in Genetics. Presentation of a paper (oral)/poster on the work carried out during the fellowship tenure is encouraged.
