NMC gives nod to 2 new government medical colleges with 50 MBBS seats each in Bihar
Patna: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved two new government medical colleges in Bihar, Government Medical College, Chhapra (Saran), and Shri Ram Janaki Medical College and Hospital, Samastipur, with 50 MBBS seats each for the 2026-27 academic session.
With the 100 additional seats approved for the two new government medical colleges, Bihar's total MBBS seat count is expected to rise to 4,260, providing more opportunities for medical aspirants.
The Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the NMC issued Letters of Permission (LoPs) to both colleges on September 3, 2026, allowing them to begin with an annual intake of 50 MBBS students each. The permissions were issued following the decisions of the Second Appeal Committee.
Both colleges had initially applied for permission to admit 100 MBBS students each. However, following the assessment and appeal process, the NMC approved an annual intake of 50 MBBS students at each college for the 2026-27 academic session.
With MBBS classes starting at these colleges, students from Samastipur and Chhapra districts will have the opportunity to pursue medical education closer to home.
Welcoming the approval, Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary in a post on social media platform X thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister JP Nadda.
Sharing copies of the two Letters of Permission, the Chief Minister said that the approval of 50 MBBS seats each at the two colleges was an important step towards expanding medical education in Bihar.
"Shri Ram Janaki Medical College and Hospital located in Samastipur and Government Medical College, Chhapra (Saran) have been granted permission for 50-50 MBBS seats each starting from the academic session 2026-27. This decision is an important step towards the expansion of medical education in Bihar, strengthening health facilities, and creating new opportunities for the youth," Samrat wrote in the X post.
Currently, Bihar has 4,160 MBBS seats across medical colleges, excluding Institutes of National Importance (INIs). This includes 3,420 renewed seats and 740 increased seats. With the approval, the state's total seat matrix would rise to 4,260 MBBS seats.
